Black Sunday without a doubt as well. Fantastic Robert Shaw/Bruce Dern classic! If that's the one you are referring to.

You're not wrong. I would be.On the other hand I can think of much more appropriate clues if it were Sweet Sixteen. (16 slices of cake maybe?)

The term "sweet sixteen" is associated almost exclusively with birthdays though. Criterion already has a relationship with Loach and "Sweet Sixteen" is widely considered the best film of the latter part of his career along with "My Name is Joe". Makes a ton of sense to me, but I hope for people who love the film that "Sixteen Candles" gets the Criterion treatment.

The Breaking Point is excellent news. Always wanted to see this Have and Have Not adaption from which I understand is closer to Hemingway's story. Now could Criterion release the 1931 The Maltese Falcon?

Definitely the best batch of covers I've seen it a while. They're all awesome.

Let's boycott Criterion until they announce it.

Don't scare me with that Sweet Sixteen theory. This is the best hope we have for Sixteen Candles getting a 4k remaster. Maybe Arrow. If this ever got another blu ray from anyone other than those two labels then it'll just be a reissue of that current transfer.

I highly recommend seeking it out, I certainly dont think you'll be disappointed.
Thanks for the heads up! Will keep it in mind. Possibly one for the B&N sale (although being from the UK it's still expensive for me to import even at those times, hence being a bit picky).

For Matthau, I'd like a remaster of A New Leaf, with deleted footage that has survived, an introduction by Scorsese (he's a fan), and an audio commentary/interview with Elaine May. And a digital copy of the original script.

Gotta admit, I was never totally convinced about the Sixteen Candles clue. Criterion has some oddballs in their collection but I still was skeptical. Mja's theory makes a ton more sense to me

Maybe Olive can give a Signature Edition to "A New Leaf". It's a wonderful film. I'd love to see Elaine May sit down and discuss it.

I get that but I'd think the cake slices signifying birthday cake would be prone for a lot less confusion than using candles which, as we've seen, has major potential to imply 16 Candles. Oh well. Whichever one it is I wish it'd get announced already so I can see if I'm stuck with Universal's disc. On the other hand CC release Universal titles so I'm clinging to hope.

To be honest, Weird Science needs a new transfer the most. Currently it's distractingly bad with it's edge enhancement. And Pretty in Pink doesn't even have an HD release.

Man, I'd love a Hughes collection (including Career Opportunities and Some Kind of Wonderful).

If you guys had to pick two of these, in terms of the best film and also least likely to get a blu-ray release, which would it be?

Ashes and Diamonds
Kapo
La Strada (getting this one for sure, but chances it'll be announced for blu?)
Loves of a Blonde
Pygmalion
Knife in the Water (pretty sure the ending was ruined for me )

"Kapo" seems like it would be the least likely to get an upgrade. If I had to rank them in terms of likelihood of getting an upgrade, I'd go, from most likely to least likely, "La Strada", "Ashes and Diamonds", "Knife in the Water", "Loves of a Blonde", "Pygmalion", "Kapo".

I've seen five of them and, in terms of quality", I'd rank them "La Strada", "Ashes and Diamonds", "Kapo", "Loves of a Blonde", then "Knife in the Water".

Whoa, I can't believe we talked about Walter Matthau and I didn't even mention Charley Varrick.

Seriously, I gotta take one for the team and just order the import already.

I don't know what it says about a character's likeability if she thinks she can dance, but she can't. she didn't have my sympathies... and whatever angle through which Arnold tried to gain those viewer sympathies for her protagonist was lost on me.
It says she's 15, not even in school, poor, her mother's an alcoholic (and worse), and she doesn't seem to have friends. I don't think it's less than understandable that she would latch onto something -- anything -- that would possibly give her some modicum of hope, realistic or not.

And no offense to any teens here, but if I remember being 15 properly (which could be true, or not), and being in HS -- a lot of us weren't very smart or realistic. And sheesh, I was middle class, going to school in Grosse Pointe, had friends ... etc.

Mia's life was totally empty. All she had was this -- granted, totally unrealistic -- dream. I saw her as a very tragic, broken character.
