(The tango scene might just have my vote for the sexiest scene of any 1990s movie. It's the only thing about that film that really sticks out in my memory after all of these years.)
I'm not that great a fan of the film. Playing a character with a disability/illness is the best way to guarantee yourself an Oscar & I think the Academy just thought it was time for pacino to finally get one. He has definetely given much better roles but his speech at the end is brilliant

As for sexiest scene - just missing out by a year, Makin' Whoopee

I thought Pacino was fantastic in this film. I love the film though too. There was so much more to his performance than acting blind (which he nailed as far as I'm concerned). A very well deserved long overdue Oscar. It's criminal that he hasn't been nominated for other performances as well and that he didn't win for Godfather 2 is mystifying. That is his best performance IMHO.

I'm a huge Pacino fan, but he's had much much better roles. As joy-division states above, this was more of a concession Academy Award than anything else.

On the bright side, though, Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven won Best Picture that year, and that was one of the most deserving Best Picture winners in the history of the Academy Awards.

So do I...but StudioCanal UK are releasing the latter two on July 17th, if you're region-free. I'm not hanging around waiting for Criterion

I say bravo. I would have given it the award. Pacino grabs me with every word and move in this film.

"Where do I go from here Charlie?"

I'm region A limited, but I'm hoping that it's just a matter of time until Touchez Pas Au Grisbi and Le Trou make their way back to our shores.

Until then, I've got the DVDs, which are both pretty good.

I'm not saying he wasn't good in the film, just that he has done better & never won. Still love DDA to bits. And not forgetting The Insider, Merchant of Venice, Panic in Needle Park, Donnie Brasco, Serpico & Glengarry Glen Ross

Oh yeah absolutely agreed with the other roles he wasn't even nominated for. So many fantastic performances. I do feel he rightfully deserved his nomination and win for Scent of a Woman though.

This happens frequently with quite a few actors as well. DiCaprio comes to mind. He wins for The Revenant which I appreciate what he put himself through but that's the performance he wins an Oscar for? What happened to The Aviator (his best performance IMHO), The Wolf of Wall Street and The Departed (which he shockingly wasn't even nominated for and he owned the film).

And same with Paul Newman as you just mentioned although I thought that was a well deserved Oscar too.

Scorsese is another one. So many masterpieces and his best picture award goes to The Departed? I love The Departed but he deserved Ocsars way before that film. That's one I consider an overall career award.

Yeah... I'm region free and looking forward to those, but will hold off for a few months just in case.

But there's no sign of Coup de Torchon anywhere.

Even Dick Tracy

Now THAT deserves the Criterion treatment. Barebones at the moment, not even a trailer. Would love to see the colours pop out on that

Yeah. Definately a precursor to Memento. Very neo- noir. I almost actually prefer it to Momento. Its good shit. Pick it up for sure. Nolan is a genius and one of my favorite directors.

I love Magnolia. Aimee Mann's soundtrack fits the film like a glove. But, she's just brilliant, anyway.

I still laugh my butt off when the frogs make their appearance. One of the most surreal moments I've ever experienced in a movie theater.

Lol just as I got back in the film after that awkward group sing-a-long and then that happens. That was it for me for Magnolia. A part of me regrets getting rid of it instead of giving it a second chance but I think I would still feel the same

I have it, but sadly it stands as presently un-viewed.

Which is really weird considering how much I love Nolan. I desperately need to get my act together and finally watch it. OK, that's it: Tomorrow when I get back from golf.
