What a waste. This is beyond reissuing Wes Anderson before/instead of upgrades/new titles. Could've gone for any other Lynch other than Dune. I figured it'd be Elephant Man. I figured it was gonna be like when Studio Canal put out Mullholland Drive, then CC came through with a blu that put theirs so much to shame that'd SC would have to re-release a better edition of the blu to compete.

Not every film that features real people as characters has to be a blow-by-blow account of their entire lives in a factually biographical manner. Using real people like Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett adds potency to the film because they were real people who have been mythologized to an extreme degree and Peckinpah was all about deconstructing the mythology of the old west.

I've seen The Getaway and really liked it.

Harold is one of my favorite characters of the 90s.

...poor guy.

Seeing the "Twin Peaks" film without seeing the series is also pointless. I also assume most people who are "Twin Peaks" fans have already picked up the box set. So, a standalone release makes even less sense given those factors.

I wonder if this could just be a Benjamin Button scenario where the studio wants an individual release of the title out, and are just branding it with Criterion. I don't see why Criterion would feel the need to do a release themselves otherwise.

I can never tell when you're trolling or not! In any event, that was the remake. Peckinpah directed the original though both utilize the same Walter Hill screenplay so there aren't a lot of differences between the two.

Or it was just part of the deal when they acquired the Lynch films in the first place. You get these X films, and they all get individual releases.

I wonder if Paramount is going to release a box set with the old series and new series and without the film. If so, this would make sense.

Per Mister Lime in the Kino thread, the US rights to "Cross of Iron" are a mess, and I gather that its sales potential is considered minimal enough that nobody is inclined to spend the money to sort out the rights. Not to say it's impossible, but I'd pick an import and go for it, either the UK/German for the extras or the Japanese for the region. [Note also that the main extra is an excerpt from "Passion and Poetry", which can be purchased separately in its entirety; it's a DVD, but the bonus feature is SD anyway.]

I agree with you, the film is truly great, it's a shame that rights issues have kept it from being seen.

But releasing a box-set of Twin Peaks and The Return WITHOUT FWWM wouldn't make much sense, especially given how much of a debt The Return owes to FWWM.

That iTunes box art for FWWM doesn't look right to me, not least because it doesn't feature the director's name on it.

It's the same artwork from the old DVD... probably a placeholder.

You can get the full set (The Original Series, Fire Walk With Me & The Missing Pieces) for $45.99 on Amazon right now.

Yeah, I feel like if they were going to do FWwM, they should've done it six months ago when hype for The Return was just starting up. It's crucial to The Return, like adamhopelies said, and doesn't make a lick of sense without knowing the original series first.

I'm guessing folks are right that this was an obligatory part of a package deal. So here's hoping it means more Lynch is coming. I'd love Lost Highway. It sounds like the existing international Blus aren't all that good.

Did I say it needed to be? I just think it's a lousy movie, save Coburn's performance. And not only that, as someone who has studied the LCW for over 25 years I can say the actual events make for a much more fascinating film than almost any attempt has been able to deliver, whether it be mythologized or the plain facts told on screen.

In any case, Young Guns and its sequel ironically does a much better job at both mythologizing AND deconstructing the events/participants.

I'm really hoping for a 90's Lynch set from Criterion. I've stated it previously, but would love to bring it up again:

Wild at Heart
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
Lost Highway
The Straight Story
Exclusive Bonus Disc with documentary and special features.

And include Industrial Symphony No. 1 on one of those discs.

Never gonna give up....plus I see Criterion posted today that The Art Life doc is now on iTunes....so only a matter of time for that to be released on blu.

Does Warner not hold the rights for FWWM? It says digitally that it's from New Line Cinema.

I really hope the old series becomes available as a stand alone. I'm not even it watching currently (no television), in hopes that a nice set will be available shortly after it finishes. (It is a limited run, correct? I've been avoiding most info on it.)

Would be nice as FWWM on its own isn't really particularly exciting (great movie and everything but bonus features wise it's all covered on the series set). You'd think if they had a series set lined up though they'd probably hint at it through a different clue?

If you think Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid is a lousy movie then don't watch it but if your reasoning is that it's lousy because it plays fast and loose with the historical facts, then you've clearly missed the point of the film. But that's fine, you'll always have the Young Guns movies.
