Just SUPER curious about this one, since Criterion gave us Eraserhead and Mulholland Drive already. Then throw in FWWM coming soon.... I know since it's Japan the rights are very different though...

Oh, there goes my wishful thinking again haha...

Yep. "Masterpiece" originated as a guild term. Using the term differently strips it of its intended meaning (and devalues it) then it merely serves as an overused synonym for something like "great film". That's my take on it.

Casino is a masterpiece. Goodfellas is a masterpiece. The Departed is a masterpiece. The Aviator is a masterpiece. Casino is my favorite of them all. So I do understand what your saying.

"The Aviator" isn't even close to a masterpiece IMO. It's not even among Scorsese's top 10 films to be honest. Directors can certainly have multiple masterpieces, but saying "The Aviator" is one of Scorsese's masterpieces is like saying "Marnie" is one of Hitchcock's masterpieces. I also don't think "The Departed" comes remotely close to a masterpiece.

I consider The Aviator one of Scorsese's most overlooked masterpieces. It's one of my top 5 Scorsese films and DiCaprio's best performance IMHO.

I agree with you on The Departed though. Great film though.

When I think of a masterpiece, I think of a film that defines a filmmaker, a style, a genre. A film that is completely unavoidable when talking about a particular filmmaker or genre. Just my opinion. Films like "Dr. Strangelove", "2001", "The Godfather 1 & 2", "Taxi Driver", "Nashville", "8 1/2", "The 400 Blows", "Raging Bull", "Chinatown", "The Exorcist", "Psycho", "Vertigo", "The Third Man", "Mulholland Dr.", "The Big Sleep", "Network", "The Graduate", "Breathless", "Casablanca", etc. There are a lot of great films that I don't consider masterpieces. Just my two cents.

Default 2001 A Space Odyssey

Come on...it's 2001 A Space Odyssey! Is there ANY talk of a 50th anniversary 4K coming out?

What studio would it come from...WB? Or Criterion, who've yet to adopt 4K
releases though they have used 4K DI to master many of their 2K releases.

I absolutely love The Departed and The Aviator. Two towering feats of cinema among my most favorite of films. To me they are masterpieces. We're all different.

The Departed is solid but my hatred for Matt Damon's character really affects the film for me even if that was the point of his character. I'm also not a Matt Damon fan so that made it worse.

Not yet. I have it on my rent list from Netflix. I can't buy it right now because I have titles next month coming out that I need to buy and I bought the fantastic "Get Out" last night. Highly recommend you see that if you haven't yet. I was blown away.

I lnow how it is. I wanted to pick up Ghost World but other titles came first. I wanna see that Get Out.

This from the synopsis is dead on about Repulsion:
"A surreal, mind- bending odyssey into personal horror, and it remains one of cinema's most
shocking psychological thrillers."

I avoid films with Matt Damon, Eddie Murphy, Will Smith, Tom Cruise & Adam Sandler withe a few exceptions like early Cruise & Collateral, True Grit, The Departed & Team America - World Police. Otherwise, no way would I pay to see them at the cinema. Am interested in the Martian though cos that's Ridley

Cruise is a stud in Eyes Wide Shut and Magnolia.

But if you're going to be that much of a purist doesn't any use of masterpiece with respect to film 'strip it of its intended meaning'?
