Never heard of it. Checked it up on Imdb. God awful poster for the movie. I would have avoided it like the plague. Doesn't mean its a bad movie but it doesn't help create a audience.

Just watched the special features on my Ghost World blu. The commentary track on the full clip of the dance scene from Gumnaam, (the movie Enid is watching and dancing to in her graduation robe at the start of GW) made me really really want to watch this film. It just looked so cool. I've seen GW like ten times and never thought twice about what film the scenes were from but seeing it as a whole take...it just looked awesome.

In a literal If You Give A Mouse A Cookie way I started thinking what other films from India Ive seen. Other than Ray's films that CC have already released I don't think I've seen any other true Indian films. That makes me very sad.

Has the preparations for the B&N started for you guys?

I've been saving up for months.

All I need now is the thread in the deals section, some coupon codes, and patience.

Gumnaam is an unauthorized adaptation of (ha!) Ten Little Indians aka And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. The logic leaps in the film are laughable and the end reveal makes no sense whatsoever, but it's a campy fun song-filled ride.

Another song from the film (recommend not to watch under the influence of hallucinogens )

I never thought L'argent would look so stunning someday. It makes the DVD look like VHS in comparison.

Yay! Just recieved my copies of Ghost World and Jeanne Dielman -- which I've never seen, but sounds like it's pretty much the sort of film I'd like, and almost everything I've read about it has been very positive.

Plus, I didn't have a single film by Chantal Ackerman. So, at least I have one, now. Also, I love Delphine Seyrig. So, looking forward to giving this a first look.

Growing up in the 90's, frontman Rob Zombie of White Zombie was a master of horror even in his music. Being the fan I was I read his interviews frequently. He always cited his favorite horror films and Carnival of Souls was among the ones he mentioned. I always wanted to see it back then but was never able. Thanks to Criterion though I've had this baby in my collection for awhile now. I definately see what Rob Z was taking about regarding this film. Dread, paranoia, disillusionment, all a great mix for black and white cinematography. Were the spectres real or imagined? You decide.

Read and watched Rumble Fish this week, both of which I really enjoyed. The book's an easy ready (less than 150 pages) if anyone else is interested.

The movie was so stylish and had such a cool sound design - a coursing rhythm throughout, whether through the dialogue or the music (or both). Hard to describe but definitely immerses you in this bizarre universe.

I was a little thrown by the ages of the actors; in the novel the kids are age 13-14, while in the film they look like they're in their late teens/early 20s. Which is fine and makes sense for an adaptation of troubled youth, just threw me off a sec.

Mira Nair would be considered a "true" Indian filmmaker. Salaam Bombay and The Namesake are two very, very good films, IMO. Nair's films would be a safe, logical, and entertaining next step if anyone wants to see something other than Ray. Monsoon Wedding is fine, but it falls into some of the traps of other mainstream Indian cinema.

In the realm of auteurist Indian cinema similar to Ray but with its own rhythm and social / cultural backdrop, I would recommend the work of maker Adoor Gopalakrishnan. Some of his films available on DVD include Man of the Story, Rat Trap (both released by UK label Second Run) and the more recent Shadow Kill (by US label Global Lens).

Looking forward to grabbing Rumble Fish at one of the upcoming sales. Love the movie and have always enjoyed Hinton's novels. Very easy to relate to as someone who grew up in a rural setting. Off the Criterion path here a bit but another Hinton adaptation I would like to see the light of day on Blu is Tex. Watched that countless times on HBO back in the day. One of those movies I have always had a sot spot for.

I haven't seen Tex yet but have always been curious about it. I'm a big Matt Dillon fan

Deepa Mehta is another one...kinda sorta. She is from India, but has been living and working in Canada for most of her life. I recommend her "Elemental Trilogy", especially the third film, Water.

I also recently got the Twilight Time release Bandit Queen by Shekhar Kapur. I first saw it back in the 90s. Excellent film.
