And since we're on the subject of Russian films, another on my very short list to watch is Aleksandr Sokurov's Russian Ark.

I've developed quite the penchant for foreign films.

I think the films you haven't seen are some of his best although I personally love Nostalghia and Solaris. I'd highly recommend checking out Solaris again. That one does wonders on repeat viewings.

Everybody should see Russian Ark at least once.

I personally think that the gimmick overshadows the story in this film, but it's still quite a sight to see.

Sofia Coppola lists Ex Machina and...Daddy's Home?!?
Sofia, lord knows why she chose Daddy's Home, is one of my favorite directors. But notice the other films she chose:

Force Majeuer

The White Ribbon

The Savages

Head-On

Under the Skin

The Incredibles

Together

Grizzly Man

Ida

Fish Tank

Ex Machina

And honestly, anyone who would put Fish Tank on her list is OK in my book. That is one awesome movie.

Coppola does have some interesting choices there and I also like Fish Tank (it's in my collection). If you haven't already, both Red Road and American Honey by that same director, Andrea Arnold, are well worth seeing.

I know, I need to see them.

But my girl knows what she's talking about.

I watched Daddy's Home on an airplane because I had literally watched everything else on offer. I was surprised that I actually enjoyed it. It's a good family film, but I wouldn't put it on any best of list.

I truly believe that Sofia Coppola is one of our most talented directors. Her films entice me. I can't say enough about how good she is.

Now, if they could get a version of The Virgin Suicides and Marie Antoinette (yes, I realize there's a French version, but from what I can tell it it sucks) on Blu-ray -- we'd be all set.

Seriously. Why?

What did you make of The Bling Ring? How long until Criterion release that?

The Bling RIng is both hilarious and terrifying at the same time. There is a moment where Emma Watson's character talks about how she is thinking that she might rule the world one day. I remember when that happened in RL. It was totally crazy.

Plus the stuff with Paris Hilton -- OMG.

The French version of Marie Antoinette? I thought it wasn't any good? Or did I hear badly?

EDIT: Irrelevant now. MA is OOP, and selling for 100 Euros. VS has a reasonable price, but I heard the subs are burned on.

Coppola is just a big fan of films with the word 'daddy' in the title. One of her top 10 films of the 90s is "Daddy's Dyin'...Who's Got the Will?"

Then why isn't The Goddaddy Pt. III on her list?

I have it. No clue about subs being forced, because I ripped my copy to add English subs anyway. It's not the greatest quality but it's better than the Sony BD-R.

I'm sure I'll get plenty of flak for this, but having now re-watched The New World, I would seriously consider that for inclusion in my top 25 of the new Century. Not that imdb is the be-all, end-all of movie assessment, but that film holding a 6.7 rating as of right now is a puzzlement to me. I've read several of the reviews on the site that disparaged the film-too slow, too boring, no plot.

Were they watching the same film I was?

It's simply one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen, but aside from the gorgeous cinematography, I never found myself looking at the clock. Not once; and this was for a 150-minute film. The acting, the script-every single element works for me. I think the pace is spot on the the period, and the subject matter. And, Q'orianka Kilcher was sublime as Pocahontas. I just love the direction Terrence Malick has taken, starting with The Thin Red Line.

When I finished, I started it from the beginning right again. There aren't too many films I can say that about.
