I've read several of the reviews on the site that disparaged the film-too slow, too boring, no plot.

Were they watching the same film I was?

It's simply one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen, but aside from the gorgeous cinematography, I never found myself looking at the clock. Not once; and this was for a 150-minute film. The acting, the script-every single element works for me. I think the pace is spot on the the period, and the subject matter. And, Q'orianka Kilcher was sublime as Pocahontas. I just love the direction Terrence Malick has taken, starting with The Thin Red Line.

When I finished, I started it from the beginning right again. There aren't too many films I can say that about.
I worship the film. Disney can take their PC version & shove it up their copyright infringement arses

Dunno if I like it more though than The Last of the Mohicans. The score, Madeleine Stowe, Wes Studi, Madeleine Stowe, Michael Mann, Daniel Day Lewis, Madeleine Stowe, Russell Means, one of the best endings to a film ever - I end up with tears in my eyes every time! Did I mention Madeleine Stowe??

So, the reason you really like the film wears a striped skirt and works in surgery?

I love The Last of the Mohicans, too. I saw it on opening weekend, and have bought it a few times now. The film that introduced me to both Michael Mann and Daniel Day-Lewis.

Oh, and Madeleine Stowe. I was hoping she and Jodhi May would kiss. You know, sisterly-like...

Easily one of the more underappreciated films in the collection is "Black Orpheus". Gave it a spin after seeing it about 10 years ago in a college class. What a wonderful, vibrant film that is. Please check it out if you haven't seen it.

I love The Gael & its use as the main theme throughout the film is great, not to mention The riveting Promentory
I love Wes as the what I suppose is the villain. You could say he steals the film
I love the sacrifice at the end
I love the scenery, especially right at the end. Now it would be all green screen
I love the unspoken romance in the film. It is never acted upon but you always know it is there
I love it because it's Machael Mann

Now excuse me while I go & weep

I bought this recently in the HMV 2 for £25 as a blind buy soley on the reason that Nick Cave wrote the song "The Lyre of Orpheus "

I hope you mean 172 min, because that's the preferred director's cut.

I've said on a few occasions that Marpessa Dawn and Breno Mello were one of the most beautiful couples on screen that I've seen. Right up there with Flynn/de Havilland, Gardner/Lancaster and Clift/Taylor. I treasure the film since it was seeing it back in the '70s as a double feature along with Juliet of the Spirits that really opened my eyes to foreign films.

I noticed Cassavetes' Husbands (1970) will be screening at BAM here in nyc from July 19-25. I get the feeling that Criterion will put that one out. It comes from Sony.

Spine #891 belongs to La poison (August release). Spines 892-899 are likely to be released by the end of year. There's an excellent chance #900 is a high-profile November release.

In the blu-ray era these have been the major round number releases:

500 War Trilogy (Non-BR at the time)
600 Anatomy of a Murder
700 Fantastic Mr. Fox
800 The Graduate

If I were a betting man I'd put money on Grand Budapest Hotel and maybe give some thought to The Tree of Life (Although, I think that will be announced Thursday).

I'm not really offended by it, but c'mon, having that prostitute saying TEAR MY STOCKINGS and the whole black toe scene or the cheap "haha, everyone's so short compared to Bill Murray" jokes are anything but a love letter to the Japanese people. For that matter, I don't recall any Japanese person in the movie having more than a couple lines, except in the "hilarious" karaoke scene where you're supposed to laugh at them butchering karaoke of a Western song. I don't think any of it is truly mean-spirited, but it's absolutely not a celebration of any aspect of Japanese culture, just a celebration of how Japan is a really funny/weird attraction for white tourists.

Maybe you meant an homage to Japan as in to the physical COUNTRY/CITY and not any of the people in it? I guess that could be true. It's mainly like, "oh those wacky little Japanese people, gotta love em!!" Again, I don't find it truly racist, I just find the idea of it championing Japanese culture to be ludicrous.

Regarding Sofia Coppola, I did absolutely love The Virgin Suicides. I should probably check out what she's done post-Lost in Translation.
very well said. I didn't find it offensive either, but found nothing funny about it at the same time. ...and I didn't really feel any chemistry between the two of them.

it is extremely high on my short list of films that people adore that I simply do not get.

I hope we finally get to see Tree of Life announced in next announcements, with the delay it did have had October seems hopeful, but we will see...

Fingers crossed - I've heard some good things about the release!

Honestly I would love to see Criterion release Sofia Coppola films on blu-ray starting with The Virgin Suicides. I remember a lot of people not liking Marie Antoinette, but I personally enjoy it. It may not be historically accurate, but it's an interesting blend of history and modern pop featuring a stellar performance by Dunst.
