Got a good chuckle this morning. Someone on another forum was excited to get a form letter reply from Jon Mulvaney.

Getting ready to get my first criterions in this sale. Trying to narrow it down to 7 or 8 (although I'll probably surpass that). Recommendations on which of these I should pick or others not listed. Basing this off of film quality and features. I've seen most of these.
12 angry men Dr strangelove Seventh seal Mulholland drive M Seven samurai Yojimbo Pan's labyrinth Wild strawberries Rashamon Throne of blood Bicycle thieves On the waterfront 400 blows Ikiru Harakiri Paths of glory 8 1/2 Wages of fear |

If you haven't got Sweet Smell of Success I'd also put that on your list too. |

There are member and non-member coupons. You can sign up for them at barnesandnoble.com, at the bottom of their home webpage (Be in the Know), to have them emailed to you.
Non-member coupons tend to be generic, so are usually available in the Barnes & Noble Coupon Request/Drop Thread, though you want to start from the end of that thread and work backwards to find the most recent ones. |

That being said, I bolded my favorites that I consider essential. All Kurosawa is a must, but Seven Samurai and Throne of Blood are the two I personally favor the most. They're both visually stunning and superbly-paced, whereas I consider Yojimbo and Rashomon to be a lot slower (but those are still essential based on the merits of their stories/narratives). Wasn't always a fan of Seventh Seal, but last time I watched it I dug it a lot. Kubrick is a must, so Dr. Strangelove is a no-brainer. Wasn't always a fan, but its humor has grown on me after so many rewatches. It's also a pretty stylish film. M was one of the first films noir I've seen, and it's still a favorite. Visually unique, and a good story. Even though I've only seen Pan's Labyrinth once, it is a hard-hitting fantasy film. A little hard to watch, but it's a great story worth experiencing. And I think the Criterion edition looks the best (even though some folks disagree on the coloring). Bicycle Thieves captivated me on the first viewing and its themes hit home hard for me. Been meaning to see it again, just haven't found the time. It is a darn good film though. On the Waterfront is a solid film with quite the violent climax. It's good, plain and simple. Harakiri is an excellent narrative and it's got a heck of a style. Very strong film imo. Wages of Fear--I need to give it another viewing soon, because I remember liking it a lot. A very vivid film with palpable suspense (although there's some drag in the first act). For me, I think it resonates more because it's an area of expertise close to my career--it is the finest film I've seen involving logistics. The others I haven't bolded aren't bad, just not ones I'd hold in higher regard. 12 Angry Men is good, plain and simple. Never really thought it went above and beyond--if you're familiar with the play, you know what you're getting. Mulholland Drive intrigued me on the first viewing, not so much on the second (Lynch in general is worth owning though--my preference goes to Eraserhead). Wild Strawberries didn't really captivate me that much the first time around, but it is a strong film (that, Ikiru, and 8 1/2 would make a superb triple-feature for films concerning life and old age and such). 400 Blows and Paths of Glory are good, plain and simple. |

Probably, but I figured they might while it's still Summertime. I do wonder if they'll release it at all as I don't think they've re-released any previous individual release yet on BD.

I can't imagine why Janus would go out of their way to create a brand new restoration of Monterey Pop, release it theatrically, and promote the hell out of it if they weren't also planning on releasing it on home video. |
