I just look forward to seeing what Criterion brings to the table for FWWM. I'm still hoping it is just part of a larger Lynch set.

I just dug out my DVD of the original release. I bought it on eBay years ago. I anticipate with Demme's death, they'll do an upgrade. However, unless it was already in progress, it'll be a little ways away. I do know that Hannibal TV creator Bryan Fuller was unable to incorporate any of the characters, plot, etc. of SotL into the show due to a rights' issue. In promoting his new show American Gods, he indicated the rights issue was almost or already up, so if he was able to restart Hannibal, he could use Clarice, Buffalo Bill, etc. In turn, it could also allow Criterion to do the upgrade.

I am on CC's press list. When the released the change of date, there was no indication it would affect September's other releases (taking one title away, etc.)

I doubt a film from 1994 would need a "restoration," however it is getting a 4K remaster from Janus films. The Janus logo is now at the beginning instead of the Miramar one, so Criterion 100% got it back in some capacity.
