Wonder if we'll ever get a Blu-ray of Floating Weeds from Criterion. Had to sell off the Eureka Blu-ray because I just don't like the quality of it.

Heh. A couple years ago, on Twitter, a Criterion employee was lamenting the lack of the theatrical cut on US Blu-ray, but I doubt if he has any sway in what Criterion picks up.

It's too bad WAC didn't include it (and Satan Met A Lady for good measure) as they did on the 3 disc DVD set. The '31 film, being pre-code, puts in a drug addiction angle and also has the luscious Thelma Todd as Mrs. Archer.

Just upgraded Good Morning which is the sweetest masterpiece created by Ozu. I own the BFI release which is sourced from an old master...the PQ there is lacking. Excited to revisit this one again .

Also purchased a Criterion dVD which is something I almost never do...just had to watch Sword of the Beast again .

Yep another Ozu that could use an upgrade from Criterion. I still have my copy but will upgrade as soon as it happens. I am positive this one is coming (its another great film by Ozu).

There's been no word but it's long overdue. It needs to join Kuroneko and The Naked Island on my shelf. Shindo is a master.

I read on another forum that some are having a problem with Criterion's SOLARIS. There were reports that it freezes around 2 hours 8 minutes in then skips. I checked my copy and it does exactly that. I emailed Criterion. You might want to check your copy if you have one.

I owned two copies of the film and neither froze.

That's my most wanted upgrade. I really hope we get it one day. The MoC disc just doesn't do the film enough justice.

I ordered a copy of Benjamin Button off of Amazon a month or so ago and it came without the disc for the film or the booklet. Would Criterion replace it for free?

If you haven't done so already, and are interested, TCM will be having a free online course for Hitchcock starting on June 26th. Enroll now if you want to get in. This will be the same format as the previous ones they did for Film Noir, and Slapstick.

I think it's no coincidence that criterion's release of The Lodger coincides with the course. Anyhoo it should be a safe bet for all thread regulars.

Quote:
We invite movie lovers and online learners from around the world to join us for a free, flexible online course, TCM Presents The Master of Suspense: 50 Years of Hitchcock (#Hitchcock50). This is the third free online course to be offered by TCM and Ball State, following Film Noir (2015) and Slapstick Comedy (2016).

In this Hitchcock course, enjoy multimedia course materials, daily in-app messaging with movie clips, mini-games, and ongoing interactions with fellow film fans on the TCM message boards or at #Hitchcock50.

We will explore 40+ Hitchcock films from his first film in the silent era, The Lodger (1927) to his final film five decades later, Family Plot (1977). In all, the course will reflect on Hitchcock's unparalleled 50-year career as one of cinema's most successful and unique filmmakers. The course will run concurrently with TCM's programming festival, "50 Years of Hitchcock", which will screen Hitchcock films Wednesdays and Fridays during the month of July 2017.

Both the course and the associated films are designed to enrich your understanding of Alfred Hitchcock, Hollywood filmmaking, and the shifts in popular culture and film production contexts that Hitchcock used to his advantage throughout his illustrious career. You will be able to share your own thoughts about Hitchcock and cinema history with a worldwide community of students, fans, and film lovers.

I haven't watched the new Good Morning blu yet, but happy to see that all indications are that it looks identical to the Shochiku release. Considering the extras on the criterion version, it seems like the definitive version (Unless you can't play Region A. The Shochiku is Region Free).

And the screening schedule on TCM is here:
http://hitchcock50.tcm.com/assets/im...chedule_r1.pdf

Is it a safe bet these will end up on FilmStruck during that time? I may finally get around to using my free trial during those first weeks...

I saw Truffaut's Bed and Board the other night and it exceeded my expectations. (I had
liked Stolen Kisses but it took me 2 watches - probably to adjust to the shift in style that the Doinel series takes.)

In general, but especially so in BaB, it seems Truffaut really understood the ideas of romantic love from a man's point of view. Leaud's Antoine Doinel doesn't always do the right thing, but I found the situations he finds himself in to be relatable. Leaud and Claude Jade, who plays Antoine's wife Christine, have fantastic chemistry and the screenplay is littered with sweet understated moments.

One of my favorites from Truffaut and I've seen nearly all of them.

Jules and Jim is my #3 all-time favorite, but it is an acquired taste. If you love great film scores, though, you could fall in love with it like I did.

Shoot the Piano Player has some of that "romance from the male POV" that I mentioned in my post above. It's a pretty brisk 80 minutes that one could describe as a comedy / French film noir.

There are a lot of great ones, but I know you like Hitchcock and The Woman Next Door has some of those vibes. It was one of the last films he did and stars Gerard Depardieu.

I'd try one of those if you are new to Truffaut.

100% this. I probably still am going to get this DVD set eventually since there's good deals for it on eBay and the Bogie Maltese Falcon BluRay eventually.

What about The Soft Skin? The only Truffaut I've seen is The 400 Blows.
