TCM is showing early Hitchcock's in a couple of weeks. Wonder if they'll be any Criterion logos to hint at future releases.

I think Notorious and Spellbound are practically guaranteed to be back in print very soon.

FYI:

If you can't wait until the B&N Criterion sale to start, there are a few good deals to be found on Amazon right now. I just ordered They Live By Night, Summer Interlude, and La Notte.

Sometimes they sell bare bones otters with no supplements. Those ones tend to be cheaper.

Question for those who shop mostly thru the criterion.com flash sales. Please advise!

A few years back I got my free $50 after 500 loyalty points. Getting close to my next free $50, but now it says this-

LOYALTY POINTS

815 Points.
285 to go until a $50 gift certificate!

My question is...shouldn't I only need 185? Is this a glitch or is there something I'm forgetting? I remember using two giftcards during the Feb flash sale (one I bought when they were doing the holiday promo and the other was a gift from a family member).

The Holliday promo messed things up. I would email Claire at Loyalty@Criterion.com to clear things up. Points number should be right, "to go" number most likely wrong.

Watched Blow Out and the extra that came up with it, Murder a la Mod this weekend. Blow Out is great of course, but Murder a la Mod is impressive in that a lot of his obsessions and his eye for shooting was already quite developed at a young age. It's amateurish in its budget and actors, and yet also accomplished enough from a technical standpoint that if the movie had had its own BD release, I wouldn't bat an eye.

We tend to say that people never change after a certain age, but I admit, I didn't always think much of De Palma for the better part of my life. In fact, I only became a TRUE De Palma fan in the last 3 years. I used to think his cribbing of Hitchcock, Antonioni and various other famous directors was absolute sacrilege. But now, I get what he's been doing, or rather I appreciate better his taking elements he likes from all his favorite directors and sort of deconstructing them for his own purposes. For De Palma it's less about him trying to create that ONE MASTERPIECE and more about taking his lifelong obsessions apart and examining them one film at a time. I feel like you have to look at his output as pieces of lifetime study of film, rather than simply individual works. Also, one can never say he's not distinctive, as you can't mistake a De Palma film for anyone else's. If that isn't the biggest argument for considering him to be a True Auteur, I don't know what is.

De Palma has long been one of my favorite directors, for many of the reasons you stated. Femme Fatale is probably my most wanted film to be released on BR, as you probably could have guessed by my avatar.

If you haven't seen it yet, check out the De Palma doc by Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow... it's simply De Palma talking about his life, career, and films, with some spoiler-filled film clips included. I actually just watched it again for the 2nd time over the weekend.

Is Femme Fatale a rip off of any other films?

I know De Palma loves to remake films to a certain extent.

Anyone watch Twin Peaks?

If so, which CC movie would you consider to be similar as far as style goes to last night's (episode 8, season 3) episode? Think 2001 and Black Moon.

Anyone?

Edit: Eraserhead, obviously

The retro horror parts reminded me of Carnival of Souls.

It's not a ripoff of anything although it has elements of Vertigo (there's a car stalking sequence that mirrors a similar scene in Hitchcock's film) and Rear Window (use of binos), and it also riffs on De Palma's own previous work, with his patented split-screen technique used to great effect. But in the end it is its own beast, and definitely a must buy for me. Hoping someday WAC will put it out, if not some boutique label.

The early returns on the SC La Strada blu-ray are not encouraging. Time for SC to change their bed sheets.

This may also mean a Criterion upgrade is now further away if they don't believe the existing HD master is acceptable.

I'll never get why De Palma is considered a "rip off" artist. The guy's films are very much his own films paying homage and keeping the spirits alive from past directors he loves and has strong passion for. He's always been one of my top favorite directors and is very underrated. I highly recommend his documentary film called "De Palma" that came out last year as well.

De Palma is currently available to watch for free with an Amazon Prime membership.

I'm a big fan of De Palma and I think he definitely has a distinct style that's all his own, but more than most filmmakers he pays heavy homage to Hitchcock (and others). Movies like Obsession, Sisters, Dressed To Kill and Body Double for example all utilize obvious plot scenarios and twists from films like Vertigo, Rear Window and Psycho, but re-done in De Palma's more lurid style. The term "rip-off" can be harsh if being used to dismiss his work, but I affectionately use that term when referring to certain films of his.

Looking at Woman of the Tear on Amazon for $19 makes me want to buy it. Would be a blind buy. Is it highly recommended from my peers?
