I'd argue that the #2 and #3 films in the Apu Trilogy are better than what is generally held to be the 2nd and 3rd best films out of any other trilogy box set Criterion has put out.

that film was painful for me. I sold it individually on eBay for like $10. sorry you missed it. This Happy Breed is a pretty good film. I kept that and Brief Encounter.

"Bonfire of the Vanities" was doomed to begin with because the book is so brilliant and "Wise Guys" is one of those films you want to revisit and discover a hidden gem, but man it sucks. De Palma has always been able to incorporate humor in a lot of his darker films, but he unfortunately was saddled with two bad comedic vehicles that didn't allow him to spread his wings.
But there was actually a third mainstream DePalma comedy (in that it was financed by a major studio and featured mainstream actors in the cast) that I think is very good: GET TO KNOW YOUR RABBIT.

Alice is a Warner owned title. It's not out of the realm of possibility because it's Criterion "worthy" but if I had to guess, I would expect it to come from Warner Archive.

Bedazzled does seem like more of a Twilight Time title.

Which, IIRC, De Palma sort of disowned because he was fired after a clash of wills with Tommy Smothers.

Someone mentioned Hi Mom earlier. I think that and its predecessor Greetings would make a great double-feature from Criterion. I believe they are MGM owned titles, or at least MGM released the DVDs.

Yeah, forgot about that one. Need to check it out. I'm a big fan of "Greetings" and "Hi, Mom".

I was watching bits and pieces of my Tree of Life Blu-ray the other day.

I know a lot of you are holding your breath for a Criterion release so we can finally see that rumored longer cut. However, I'd like a Criterion release because I honestly find the PQ on the existing Blu-ray to be quite mediocre. A 4K transfer would be superb.

Still the best film of 2011.

I still don't understand why Criterion hasn't released Buffalo 66.

It's such a perfect fit.

If there's any film in the history of cinema that was made for a Criterion release, it's Buffalo 66.

I know it already has a release, but I'm sure it could be improved upon.

Want to know the truth?

Buffalo 66 could've had any distribution company it wanted. Any distribution company it wanted. You know why Buffalo 66 doesn't have a Criterion release? Huh?

Because Criterion stinks!

They stink.

They're evil.

All distribution companies stink, all of them.

They're backstabbers like Mulvaney.

...Criterion just happens to be the worst.

On the subject, I've pre-ordered the 4K Blu-ray + Blu-ray combo of Terrence Malick's Song to Song to future-proof my purchase for the day when I am fully equipped to watch 4K Blu-rays.

I've heard some disappointing things about Song to Song, but I also heard disappointing things about To the Wonder and Knight of Cups, and I enjoyed those particular films.

I figure that, at the least, I'll be treated to some cool music and to a lot of graceful close-ups of Rooney Mara and Natalie Portman.

I had a 4K player for a very short time. It started acting wonky, so I returned it. But if there's a good solid reason for me to get a 4K player it's coming out in September and thats Blade Runner. I wasn't too wowed by the old Blu-ray of Unforgiven either, so I was happy to see the 4K PQ get such high marks.

I only own Arrival, La La Land, and Mad Max: Fury Road in 4K and I am impressed so far. I am definitely picking up Blade Runner as it is one of my favorite films of all-time.

I'll have to see what to do about Unforgiven as I've only seen the film once several years ago and I wasn't too impressed with the film. Perhaps I was at a point in my life where I was rather ignorant in terms of the western genre or maybe I just wasn't in the mood to watch it.

I watched it 3 times and hated it then I watched it again when the remastered blu ray got announced and I highly enjoyed it. I went into it with different expectations than my previous viewings. I viewed it as something different than a traditional western and I appreciated it for that. I still don't think its perfect though. Pacing is a little slow at times and could've had a little more western action but it's solid.

Default Any takers?

With the price drops/sales, I want to give my money to Amazon and B&N as quickly as I can part with it, but I feel like I already own just about all the Criterions that I have ever actively sought. But there must me some out there that I would enjoy. But how to know?

Any recommendations? I tend to like noir, timeless classics, and horror. I tend to NOT like French new-wave, sports movies, or rom-coms.

Here is what I have. What hidden gems is my Criterion collection missing?

That's a great group of films you own, there. A have a pretty high percentage of those myself.

Some suggestions to get you started:

8 1/2
The 400 Blows
City Lights
The Kid
La Dolce Vita
The New World
Persona

The Three Colors trilogy
Tokyo Story

That is true, but when it all comes down to it I just want Pather Panchali. That's why I hope that if they plan on releasing those Olympic films, they release them separately.

You're missing out on a fair bit of Robert Altman there. I would highly recommend The Player, such a brilliant satire of Hollywood filmmaking. His ensemble pieces, Short Cuts and Nashville, are also recommended, although it may be a bit difficult since the narrative flows between the people more rather than anything "big" happening. I'd also pick up Scanners and The Brood, two great David Cronenberg sci-fi horrors. Dressed to Kill and Blow Out are PRIME examples of how to make a thriller. I can't recommend both of them highly enough. I'd also recommend Picnic at Hanging Rock. It is truly one of the greatest movies ever made.

It'll be a while before I have a 4K Blu-ray player, but I've been buying 4K Blu-ray + Blu-ray combo packs of newer releases (La La Land, The Revenant, The Shallows, etc.) in order to future-proof my purchases.

I did buy the new 4K + Blu-ray set of Unforgiven, because the standard Blu-ray has the restored version as well. It's an incredible step up from the previous Blu-ray release in every way.

I have a 4K television, but it's from a couple of years ago, and it's not equipped to connect with a 4K Blu-ray player. Even so, standard Blu-rays look amazing on my setup, and I mean truly amazing.

I do sometimes wonder why I'm bothering, because standard Blu-rays really hit the sweet spot for me already, and I don't see a lot of need to jump to another format. I'm sure that I'll be glad that I've got these when I do inevitably upgrade my television, though.
