If they are indeed releasing Sixteen Candles, then I would guess it would make sense to release The Breakfast Club also. They seem to go hand in hand.

It would be awesome if they do in fact release Weird Science and were able to get an interview with Paxton prior too his way too early passing.

The Breakfast Club is a fantastic film IMO. I think Sixteen Candles is the one that's overrated, but that's just me.

With that said...

Yeah, I get that, but I don't see how Criterion benefits from releasing movies that already have an existing Blu-ray release. Unless this is a new cut of the film with never-before-seen footage, I'd just as soon pay a lot less for the previous Blu. Then again, Criterion has done enough re-releases at this point, so I guess it must be profitable for them?

So long as they don't take it as far as the late '90s days of Michael Bay Criterion releases.

I did buy the new 4K + Blu-ray set of Unforgiven, because the standard Blu-ray has the restored version as well. It's an incredible step up from the previous Blu-ray release in every way.

I have a 4K television, but it's from a couple of years ago, and it's not equipped to connect with a 4K Blu-ray player. Even so, standard Blu-rays look amazing on my setup, and I mean truly amazing.

I do sometimes wonder why I'm bothering, because standard Blu-rays really hit the sweet spot for me already, and I don't see a lot of need to jump to another format. I'm sure that I'll be glad that I've got these when I do inevitably upgrade my television, though.
You could have almost bought a 4k player for not much more than those combo packs combined.

I do have to ask what you mean by saying your TV isn't equipped for a 4k player. It has to have an HDMI

I too wonder how many they will actually sell considering they've already been released individually, as a "John Hughes Yearbook Collection" box set, and the most popular one has already been given a 4k upgrade. With that and Criterion's higher price, I'm not sure how many fans will buy them again unless they have the deleted scenes. I'm thinking they have to sell them as a box set because they can't sell them for $39.95 each when Universal's 4k remaster of The Breakfast Club is $6.26 at Amazon.

I bought my 4K television (LG 49UF6700) in late 2014. My HDMI input on the TV is not HDCP 2.2 compatible and it will not support HDR. I bought the television for a low price at a Target sale. I knew at the time that it was not compatible, but I needed a new television, the price was great, and I did not expect 4K Blu-rays to be as successful as they are becoming now.

If I were to hook up a 4K Blu-ray player to my system, then I would get a message saying that it will only play standard HD.

It's no huge deal at present, because most of the Blu-rays that I own and watch are obscure cult titles that may never see the light of day on 4K discs, but the 4K discs for the newer titles that I'm buying will be there when I do upgrade my television and buy a 4K player in the future.

I wonder if Pretty in Pink is a possibility too, being written by Hughes, and coming from Warner? As a whole, I think a box set that features this slice of cult 80's Americana would fit well in the Criterion library, perhaps more so than any one of them would individually.

I love The Breakfast Club but the current remastered blu ray is just fine with me.

Pretty in Pink is owned by Paramount.

Box-set speculation pushes the drawing into super-pun territory...Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, and another post-Club third film would indeed make a "Breakfast Club sandwich."

I think there are better choices to be added to the Criterion than The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles. But if Criterion feels they need titles like this to survive I guess we will see them being released. But these films have been released to death already. Bring on something that has not been released yet.

Love the film, but c'mon Criterion... The double/triple dips are getting ridiculous!! Focus on restoring MANY of your catalog releases that need a blu upgrade instead of this stuff..

I mean, if they're going to add a number of his films I'd love Uncle Buck.

I will watch Sixteen Candles over it ANY day, at least that one's funny and most of the characters are likable. (even if it is very, very un-PC today) Plus, no stupid dance montage!
I watched "The Breakfast Club" recently for the first time in 10+ years and parts of it hold up and parts are really cringey (the dance scene, the heart to hearts after they get stoned). But high schoolers are incredibly cringey in general, so it kind of works. Also, you're telling me that Bender wouldn't be going after Ally Sheedy's character when not only is she way more on his wavelength, but is also sexier than Molly Ringwald? Bender is also an unrepentant, relentless a-hole who masks it in rebellion. Nonetheless, it is an important time capsule of American film.

It's funny that I can handle all of the gore in Cannibal Holocaust, Dawn of the Dead, and Fulci's Zombi 2, but I cannot handle Ally Sheedy's character shaking her dandruff onto her drawing in The Breakfast Club.

Bodily function stuff and assorted phenomena creep me out in movies.

Another thing about The Breakfast Club that always annoyed me is that Anthony Michael Hall's character got stuck writing the essay while the other characters were hooking up with each other. There's never any justice in the world, but I guess that's part of the point of the movie.

For the most part, though, I still love revisiting The Breakfast Club on a frequent basis.

I wish that somebody would release Some Kind of Wonderful on Blu-ray. It's a Hughes production, and not one of his directorial efforts, but still...

Yeah, the film did really define the 80's HS years. You have the: jocks, nerds, preppies, richies/elitists and stoners. Those terms really became mainstream in the 80's. This movie defines my childhood as I am in my latter 40's, but I have seen the film so many times, I know the words probably by heart now, as I am sure many others do. It has been released SOOOO many times in dvd and blu, let alone vhs, LD that unless the CC has some special cut of the film, I will be passing and keeping my Universal release.

Bring on some blu catalog upgrades!!!

Criterion is making me really happy on this rainy and bleak Atlanta day.

I've owned The Breakfast Club in every home video format, and I've double-dipped on Blu-ray by replacing the initial release with the remastered one from a couple of years ago. I'll happily buy it again if Criterion releases it, and that will probably be my final version.
Fingers crossed for Weird Science. Then again, they could do a boxset of all the films he directed so we could get the extended cuts of Breakfast Club and planes Trains and Automobiles.
