I haven't seen the current Blu for Inland Empire in motion, but based on pics the image looks a bit more live if that makes sense? I'd say it's still a clear benefit over the DVD cuz you get closer to the source losslessly, though the source wasn't high in definition anyway. A lack of compression can do wonders even for something like Inland Empire imo.

There are some better looking DV films out there, but Lynch didn't even care about lighting to focus (so many shots are back focused because h has the camera too close, out of the lens' focus range).
So is that to say you won't watch dvds either?

There is a difference between resolution and poorly shot films. Inland Empire is a horribly shot film.

Maybe a potential Criterion release eventually?!?
I just recently watched this film about 3 weeks ago and liked it. I ended up blind-buying this on blu-ray and though I don't usually do this, I think the film is rewarding if one is used to watching Jim Jarmusch's slow paced and thoughtful films. I can imagine a lot of non film-buffs would lose their patience after the first 10 or 15 minutes but I found the film "rewardingly repetitive". It's about an ordinary man living an ordinary life in an ordinary place. I find everyday, ordinary stories to be far more compelling than epic superhero films, at least in my opinion.

Not sure I can see this film being release as a Criterion edition though.

Considering it has zero extras and Criterion's been rumored as of late to be working on bringing more Jarmusch on Blu-ray, I'd say the chances are good.

Have you seen the film? I think its good but I wouldn't call it "essential" viewing by any means. I'd rather see some older Jarmusch ported to blu-ray, especially Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai and an upgrade of Stranger Than Paradise.

Additionally, I'd rather see 2016's Gimme Danger (THAT IS STILL not on U.S. blu-ray unlike Paterson) in the Criterion Collection than 2016's Paterson. I'd drool thinking of an awesome new Criterion interview with Iggy Pop, one of the most intelligent and dynamic rock stars ever.

I've been sending wish lists to Criterion since the 90s with Advise & Consent near the top along with Darling, Look Back in Anger, Sanctuary, etc.

And when do we get My Man Godfrey, The Lady Eve? How about throwing in Bringing Up Baby, Tovarich, and The Mad Miss Manton?

Been saying the same thing about The Lady Eve. Also, Ruggles of Red Gap and The Lost Weekend would be nice. I also really want to see Darling too but I don't really want to buy a DVD that old and at the moment a Region Free player will have to wait until the holidays or early next year.

Yes X 1,000,000,000 for Gimme Danger. It cant get better than The Stooges and Jarmusch.

Yes. I did not like the film.

I'd like to see Ghost Dog and Broken Flowers get the treatment.

I wrote to Criterion to suggest that they release 'The Virgin Suicides'. They seemed pretty receptive to the suggestion (compared to other times I've written them to suggest movies). So I hope that works out.

That would be a dream come true, as a major Sofia Coppola fan and a fan of the entire cast. I've grown up where it supposedly takes place as well.

Can they also bring Marie Antoinette to Blu as well?

Why do you keep saying this? I already corrected you on this and it's blatantly untrue.

Just because you don't personally understand it doesn't mean it doesn't make sense.

A Sofia Coppola box set from Criterion containing all of her films (or at least The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation and Marie Antoinette) would be absolutely amazing.

It would be a perfect fit for Criterion. Truly a poetic film, and a great one at that.

Here's a pic of me I had to post when I was in NYC last year (in November), standing in front of Jim Jarmusch's Gimme Danger movie poster in front of the IFC Center.

If anyone is itching to purchase a documentary during the upcoming Barnes & Noble sale, I can't recommend Ingrid Bergman: In Her Own Words enough.

As I posted in the "Name the Last Film You've Watched In Your Home Theater" thread.

Quote:
Documentaries are very hit or miss for me, but this one was remarkable and something incredibly special.

The documentary explores Bergman's life from her childhood to her death, blending archive footage from interviews, film roles, home movies, interviews with her children and family members, and her personal diary (narrated by Alicia Vikander) to present an intimate portrayal of the actress unlike anything one has ever seen.

Bergman learned the importance of capturing memories from her father, which I presume is one of the main reasons for her starting a diary at a young age and keeping it full of new memories into her later years. Almost everywhere she went, she would bring a camera and record home movies to capture the spirit, the mood, and the memories that were being made right before her eyes.

At the end of the day, the documentary is a meditation on life and learning how to find fulfillment by making the most of one's life.
