I saw Cocteau's La belle et la Bête for the first time this evening at a local theatre. It looks beautiful on the big screen. It is funnier than I thought it would be...but I found myself more fascinated by the lighting and shadows than the story itself. I'm not sure I will put it on my Criterion Sale list, but I'm glad I finally got to see it...and on the big screen.

FNE at KVIFF 2017: Czech National Film Archives Inks American Distribution Deal

Quote:
KARLOVY VARY: The Czech National Film Archives has signed an agreement with distribution company Janus Films, the company behind the prestigious Criterion Collection, to licence 30 Czech classic film titles for North America. The films will be released over a 10 year period with English subtitles on DVD, online, on television and in cinemas.

The Criterion Collection is a respected publisher of DVD and Blu-ray editions. Their prestigious releases will include all of the titles provided by NFA within this contract, and more films are in negotiation. Criterion has become a long standing guarantee of high quality and their disc releases are cherished around the world.

The deal was announced by NFA helmer Michal Bregant at a special event during the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, where the NFA presented a range of newly restored Czech classic films available on DVD and a new English language book on the history of Czech cinema. All are for sale online on the NFA website.

Bregant said: “The demand for classic Czech films in the US is on an increase, also thanks to the retrospective we have presented this April at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Step by step we broaden the interest of foreign audiences beyond the realms of the new wave.”

Ha! I just watched this with my 13 year old daughter tonight and was gonna post about it. She's been raving about the new live action Beauty and the Beast since she saw it in the theater. I finally told her she HAD to watch the one I have. She wasn't thrilled at all being that it's a 1946 film in black & white and in French. But she watched it with me anyway. I really thought she would like it. She didn't. I told when she gets older she'll look back on this as a fond memory. You know, watching Beauty and the Beast with her father.

I don't think any of its funny. Maybe I'm too serious?

The French release is much better, form a 4K remaster. It just doesn't have English subs, so you'd have to add them yourself. But I'd wait for that release to come stateside over buying the current Criterion edition.

I guess I continue to say it because it's true. You can correct me all you want, but that's 100% how the film originated. You do know that the "Rabbits" sequences were released on DavidLynch.com as short films way before Inland Empire was made, right? Even Laura Dern said it was made up of a pastiche of shorts they shot 1 scene at a time with no full script, whenever David would get an idea, and only some were directly connected to the "narrative" he created. So no, it's not blatantly untrue, no matter what you want to believe.

I understand it well enough, it's just not good.

Indeed, parts of the movie originated on Lynch's Web site, davidlynch.com, itself a labyrinth of wormholes and worlds within worlds. The rare major filmmaker who caught on early to the potential of streaming video, Lynch has been creating short films specifically for an online audience since 2001. One of his more popular Web series, Rabbits, in which a rabbit-headed family recites Beckettian non sequiturs (to the sound of canned sitcom laughter), actually made its way into Inland Empire.
So yes, I am 100% correct,, Mr. "Blatantly Untrue." It was made up of short films he was experimenting with woven into the Laura Derp story. Please continue to school me since you are all-knowing.

I hope, that somewhere in the cloud, this is in the plans. Seriously I would pay Criterion to put these out. And a box set ... OMG, stop teasing me. That's not even fair!

But yes, The Virgin Suicides and Marie Antoinette are just absolute musts. Criterion, if you're listening, I will PAY YOU!

Lost In Translation, considering it's a modern-day classic; this should've been one of their first few Blu-ray releases.

Frankly, I'm somewhat surprised that cinephiles haven't pressured Criterion into having this released.

I hope someday Bakeroo comes to his senses and calls Sofia... Besides she's been waiting all her life for that one phone call.

My favorite film of all-time.

I feel somewhat optimistic about it getting a release someday. The current release can greatly be improved upon.

Rabbits was shot around 2002 for DL.com. It was reshot for Inland Empire - watch and see how it doesn't match up if you compare the web version to the film version. Not only was it reshot, sequences actually take place inside the rabbit room later on in the film (assuming you didn't get that far). Or if your criticism is with originating ideas in this way, frankly what's wrong with that? Y'know, if you actually sat through the film you'd probably realise the interconnectedness of all the seemingly disparate elements, because they are not at all the way you describe them. What other unrelated short film experiments?

If you're just referring to the rest of the movie (i.e. the Polish scenes, the LA scenes), it'd be interesting to know why they are "unrelated" when they are made up of the same actors as Inland Empire playing different parts (duality and doppelgangers are nothing new for Lynch) and contain the same thematic material, and why they ultimately all link together in the end. I mean, Dern herself is actually IN a lot of those scenes. Watching Lynch pull the strings together in the final 30 minutes from the seemingly completely disconnected opening is what makes the film one of his crowning achievements, and is basically what I expect him to do on the new Twin Peaks too as it resolves. It is not random films joined together, nor are they unconnected or unrelated in any way. They are totally connected! Many people get a lot out of the movie because of that. It's an ontological puzzle.

The film may have originated in that way - in fact not even as a movie, just as scenes for Dern - but I don't see why that has any relevance on what the movie eventually turned into.

I know she was born Norma Jean Mortenson, but if I used that name, it's possible not everybody would know who she was, though I think most of those who frequent the Criterion thread would get it.

I mean, if we were celebrating Cary Grant's birthday, I wouldn't post "here's a young Archibald Leach".

And, I like both looks. She was a beautiful woman, regardless.
