Yep that's what the worker said, it was like that during the November sale last year as well. They were still taking them for blu-rays last July.

I skipped seeing a print of The Bad and The Beautiful in a Lewton series a few weeks ago–just didn't feel like driving to the theater since– but I have since listened to the You Must Remember This episodes where it gets discussed several times and I'm kicking myself! Gonna have to rent the DVD from the library for now.

Anyone else received an email from Photobucket requesting a $400 "upgrade" to continue third-party hosting? I've been using them for years to post images on forums such as this, on eBay, and elsewhere. Can't imagine it's going to be a winner; more likely a death knell. Anyway, I'll be very grateful for suggestions on alternate solutions for posting images. Thanks.

I haven't got around to it, but if your a fan of early musicals I would suggest . Also would suggest Stray Dog which is a nice Japanese film noir by Kurosawa.

My favorite Eclipse set is Late Ozu. I wouldn't recommend the I am Curious duo. I saw the first film when it came out and it was a snoozer then and a relatively recent rewatch had the same result.

I got the same thing. None of my pics work on forums anymore unless i "upgrade". I've been looking and found two possible sites to use: Flickr and Imgur.

No, it's real. I checked, and there are news stories about it. Thanks for the suggestion.

Agreed.

The only "scam" here was Photobucket's pulling this with no warning whatsoever hoping they could extort money out of users like ebayers who have auctions up that needed images hoping they would shell out money right then in a panic to get their images restored.

Anyway, back to Roman Holiday for a moment...

Is Paramount licensing to Criterion lately?

Yeah, a crass move by Photobucket.

I watched Roman Holiday for the first time just a few weeks ago, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Would indeed make a great Criterion release.

Has anyone else used Filmstruck on Roku? I'd rather them have delayed the release even further because it's as buggy as anything. Takes forever to load between screens, the buffering borders on 56k, and the Roku itself restarted three quarters of a way through Secrets & Lies, forcing me to (very slowly) fast forward from the beginning of the picture to find my way. Hmph. Probably going to end up my membership before the free trial ends and just pray for a Samsung release.

Killer line-up, though, and that movie has to be one of the most superbly acted ensembles I've ever encountered.

This isn't related to criterion releases but I was thinking earlier how many *living directors would be consider big names outside of film circles. The go to answer would be Spielberg along with Scorsese, Tarantino and Nolan. Then you filmmakers who became established prior to directing but are known for their craft as Eastwood and Allen. It starts to get tricky once you get past those names.

David Fincher?
The Coen Brothers?
Wes Anderson?
Paul Thomas Anderson?
David Lynch?
Michael Bay?

*Among the deceased, Hitchcock and Chaplin stand above all.

It's surprising how little a lot of people know about most topics in general. Even a lot of reasonably intelligent people tend not to have a lot of curiosity. Spielberg definitely would win this. I'd say he'd be the only sure thing along with Tarantino. Scorsese is very famous among film enthusiasts obviously, but I'll bet a lot of people know his most famous films more than they are aware of him or his body of work. There's very little chance most non-film buffs would have any idea who Paul Thomas Anderson or David Lynch is. As sad as it is to say, I'd guess Michael Bay is probably the third most famous living director among non-film fans after Spielberg and Tarantino.

I still think John Ford should be on this list. Almost every big director has praised his work and been admired by it. We also see the influence of his work even still today.

If WB doesn't wanna release or license The Devils, could they at least give Criterion access to Lisztomania?

Side-note: If there isn't crucifiction imagery, is it really a Ken Russell film?

Re: the living directors question. It's like asking someone who doesn't follow sports how many fairly recent athletes they could name in a particular sport. In basketball, LeBron, Kobe (retired), maybe Durant, and Stephen Curry. In baseball, probably A-Rod and Jeter, who are both retired. In football, Brady, Manning (retired), and maybe Aaron Rodgers. In soccer, probably Messi and Ronaldo.

Or someone who doesn't follow politics, how many Senators could he or she name? Maybe Bernie, although he or she might not know he's in the Senate, and maybe John McCain.

It's probably about the same for directors for people who aren't into film aside from seeing the big-budget horseshit they shovel into theaters nowadays.

People might know the Wachowskis because of the Matrix films.

Otherwise, yeah, it's Spielberg, Lucas, Tarantino, and Michael Bay.

I know them because of Bound

My fave directors, in no order are

PTA
Wes Anderson
Cronenberg
Danny Boyle
Edgar Wright
Chris Nolan
Steve McQueen
Scorsese
Fincher
The Coens

Demme would've made this list a few months ago

Bay may be one of the most well known directors but for all the wrong reasons. More like infamous

Never been that much a Spielberg fan
