Golf is an insanely expensive hobby. I play once in a while. Clubs cost a ton, a sleeve of decent balls costs $10-12. My uncle plays a few times a week and spends $90-120 a round usually because he doesn't like to play on public courses because the pace of play is slow. I have a buddy who buys new suits all the time and new watches. I'm always amazed. You need 2-3 nice suits and maybe one watch, but this guy just compiles them and rarely wears a lot of them. Everyone has their hobbies, but film or album or book collections are just viewed as more niche.

Yeah, film buying is a relatively inexpensive hobby compared to others. I was a big LEGO collector a few years ago and could easily spend over $700 per year. I'm pretty sure some years over 1k was spent. Decreasing interest+rising prices made me cut back on LEGO buying, and I haven't gotten a set since 2015. Hell, buying video games on release date will cost you $60. For that price, I see around 8 movies in theaters per month with a decent mix of matinee pricing. Blu-Rays are a fun hobby to me, and I don't have a huge issue spending several hundred per year on them.

As long as the option is available, I'll always buy physical media. Don't get me wrong. I stream and rent a lot of movies online. I just can't bring myself to ever buy movies digitally. It doesn't feel complete to me. If I buy a blu-ray and have a physical copy in my hand, then I feel like I actually own it. More people may be buying less physical media. I know people who are buying less and less movies every year. But when you see the incredible effort that companies like Criterion, Arrow Video, Scream Factory, Plain Archive, Manta Lab, etc. are putting into the movies they release, how can you NOT buy physical media? They're releasing content, artwork, and packaging that you can't get when you buy a digital copy of a movie.

The NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD news has gotten me way excited for October announcements, so now I'm speculating for the last three month of 2017.
If Criterion does indeed have the rights to SILENCE OF THE LAMBS again, I think October would be the perfect month to drop it. I'm thinking the Hughes' will drop in November, two big releases for the BN sale. If WEST SIDE STORY is coming, I can see that being a December release for Christmas. Hopefully we get a Chaplin or a Lloyd in the mix too. Haven't seen either of those guys this year. Probably no more Wenders this year, though I'm still hopeful on END OF THE WORLD, especially since it'll be on TCM in two weeks. Some potentially big money makers for them on the immediate horizon. Hopefully paves the way for more obscure acquisitions. |

As for Fellini, hopefully Juliet of The Spirits is on the way, but my dream pick would be Nights of Cabiria, which they no longer have the rights to correct? |
