Not exactly a wildly imaginative, creative explosion on the Barry Lyndon cover art.

...but I'm not complaining.

Well, I caved in...

Being the growing minimalist and all, I went on down to Barnes & Noble yesterday and purchased these two films on blu-ray for 50% off:

Is there a reason that Cowie definitely = Bergman? He did write a book on Kurosawa after all.

Re: Bergman. At this point I'm looking forward to seeing the trilogy, Scenes From a Marriage and Hour of The Wolf on blu. The rest I can take or leave even if many of them are fine films.

I;m anxiously awaiting a VIRGIN SPRING blu-ray, and I've held off on picking up the DVD for years because I assume it'll be here soon.

Disappointed that NotLD isn't coming before Halloween after all the speculation.

I like Vampyre well enough but where the hell is Passion of Joan of Ark? Or Day of Wrath?

Also I don't understand the need for this release of FWWM, but I guess there's some who like the film and not the series? Would have preferred a release of Lost Highway.

Complaints out of the way, I'll still pick up Vampyre and Barry Lyndon at some point. Probably rent The Lure. Have no idea what Personal Shopper is so ill wait to hear what others think.

People on these boards pissing all over Shout Factory for their supposed re-releases, now Criterion is doing it for two movies that have very good Blu-rays.

I pissed all over this month, dnt know if you saw. Just like I've been pissing all over SF this whole year. Personal Shopper is the only release worth it IMO. Criterion pulled a shout factory this month, & shout factory's re-releases are not supposed re-releases. That's what they are, re-releases.

The FWWM blu in the set is perfectly fine. It also has the missing pieces, & I can't see myself buying Barry Lyndon for the third time. No matter how great of a disc it is, or FWWM for the 4th time. The Lure???? WTF is that?

But I will be picking up Stalker & Spotlight on a Murderer today.

I generally hate to ask for recommendations on what to buy from a BN sale, but it has been way too long since I've purchased a Criterion. There are so many titles I'm interested in. Which ONE of these would you choose and why?

L'eclisse (I own the other two films in the trilogy)
Anatomy of a Murder
Wings of Desire
Friends of Eddie Coyle (seen)
Dr. Strangelove (seen)
Picnic at Hanging Rock
Don't Look Now
Umbrellas of Cherbourg
Blow-Up
Straw Dogs
Umberto D.
The Graduate (seen)
Medium Cool
Eyes Without a Face
I Knew Her Well
Island of Lost Souls
Still Walking
His Girl Friday
The Kennedy Films Of Robert Drew

Thanks!

If I had only one I could pick-

Blow-up-My Fav Antonioni film & one of the best blurays of the yr. The film is endlessly re-watchable and probably has some of the best cinematography ever!!! I see something new every time I watch it.

Very good list. In bold are the 5 I recommend the most. Underline is the one I did not enjoy...

A word about L'eclisse --> I have a heard a lot of people saying it is boring (including the lead character in Il Sorpasso )...but this is the one in trilogy I enjoyed the most...and did not find it boring...

I'm considering picking up By Brakhage blu ray release in the sale. Anyone offer any insight into whether it's worth it or not?

I think the original art is very sexual and tight like a tiger. I'm glad Criterion went with it.

The only Antonioni films I've seen are Red Desert and L'Avventura and I have the Criterion's. I just ordered La Notte. Judging by the screenshots and synopsis it sounds and looks amazing. I'll get L'eclisse next time...

Don't blind buy this unless you're familiar with Brakhage or Avant Garde. Plenty of Brakhage stuff is available on YouTube if you wanna see what it's like.

That being said, if you like his stuff, the set is great and well worth the money IMO

Anyone been able to find copies of Stalker in-store? My 10% member discount isn't applying online. Besides, I'd like instant gratification on this one
