I'm a loner myself to a degree but I have friends that I hang out with and have been in quite a few relationships. I don't know many people at all though that are as passionate about, love, watch or collect films the way I do except people on these forums.

I just don't like when loners are always perceived in a negative way in films for the most part. That's one of the reasons I think the casting of Ryan Gosling in Drive was perfect. He's not some creepy looking serial killer and they don't portray being a loner in a bad light in that film (which may or may not be arguable)
I think some of us are reading too much into that scene. It's more to illustrate the Buscemi character's sense of self-loathing than being an actual commentary on social behaviour. He doesn't like himself so he sees his collector's interest in things as a symptom of a larger problem within him.

I think hoarding in general is unhealthy and does speak of some sort of emotional void. Difference between hoarders and collectors is that hoarders hoard everything in their lives--newspapers, pop cans, food containers, etc,. They can't throw anything away. But collecting specific things like movies is different and more about personal interests.

Great movie that got a really unfair shake upon release. Still need to pick up "The Deer Hunter" and "The Sicilian' at some point.

This, "Stalker" and "Shogun Assassin" were excellent additions to my collection from the most recent B&N sale.
Glad you liked Heaven's Gate - at the very least, it has some of the most gorgeous scenes and shots in movie history. There are also some neat little visual subtleties as well. For example, the rotating rings of students around the graduation tree is echoed at the end with the rotating rings of immigrants and Stock Growers Association hit men on horseback.

Although I think Deer Hunter is the better movie, and more emotionally powerful and haunting, Heaven's Gate is one of the best visual spectacles ever.

Did you select no-rush shipping during checkout? It gives me $97.99 plus tax when I do it.

Yes. It's $119.87 instead of $96.03 now, killing the deal. A shame, I might've gone for that.

That doesn't seem to work for me here in Canada, but I was referring to the fact that UncleBuckWild quotes an initial price of 96.03 that seems to be gone already.

These offers are actually a result of Amazon PM'ing Walmart.

Ever since WM started those in-store pick up discounts, Amazon soon followed with their own version.

The thing is while Amazon's bots track and match WM prices, they sometimes end up offering additional reductions that work in our favor.

These giltches usually last for an hour or two.

Therefore, I highly recommend you guys keep up with the Irresistible deals thread.

You will love The Hidden Fortress. It's easily one of Kurosawa's best films.

And would there be a Star Wars without that film?

It's one of the big films that inspired Star Wars.
[Show spoiler]The Hidden Fortress is told from the POV of the lowest characters.
One of the extras on Hidden Fortress is an interview with Lucas where he talks about the influence of Hidden Fortress on Star Wars.

I only bought 3 - Tampopo, The Lodger, and, Stalker.

I can't wait to see The Lodger as the only time I saw it was on a VHS copy recorded off of AMC probably 20 years ago. I'm expecting a pretty awesome and unique home viewing experience. The modern soundtrack matched w silent cinema will make it so. I don't watch a lot of silents, but I enjoyed the heck out of The Gold Rush which also has newer music recorded for it.

I watched Mystery Train for the first time last night.

Didn't like it as much as Down By Law.

Definitely dug the music.

Dug the Memphis locations.

Part of me thought the story was kind of groovy.

Another part of me thought it was filled with a series of insipid, meaningless, meandering conversations that I kept trying to convince myself were interesting, simply because they were taking place in a Jim Jarmusch film.

And Jim Jarmusch films are cool.

...and I've always wanted to be cool myself.
