I agree,

Stalker is arguably one of his best and most challenging films. (at least for me)
I wouldn't start with it.

So far I've received 3 suspicious disks, 2 of which were obvious re-wraps. Heck Cronos was wrapped in a blue case with what looked like photo copy art.

My Hidden Fortress had no sticker, but neither did any if the copies at my local store.

Default The Criterion Collection

Shit-tier trolling aside, I do find it kind of annoying that Criterion doesn't include subtitles on supplements unless they are not in English. I don't think that's too much to ask with the price they charge.

This times 100.

"Fake technological advancement"? Is that like "fake news"?

The BD is a revelation IMO. 99.9999999999% of BDs look better than DVDs, so saying it's a "fake technological advancement" is absurd.

Warner Bros. and Disney definitely provided subtitles on their bonus features.

I wish Criterion would include them, too. I watch every film with subtitles, no matter the language, just so I don't miss anything. For me, it would be helpful to have them on all the bonus features.

There are a few Criterion Blu-rays of black-and-white films where the subtitles are difficult to read against the mostly-bright backgrounds.

Akira Kurosawa's High and Low is one such example, because the subtitles are difficult to read against the brightness when Toshiro Mifune's character is arguing with executives during a heated scene.

Agreed also, even though Stalker is possibly my favorite Tarkovsky film, I'd def start with Ivan and just work your way up.

True enough. Although other folks seem to hate them, I really wish they'd use yellow subtitles on b&w film.

Seems everyone had that advice...which, I intended to take anyways. Stalker was the only one available at my local B&N. So, Stalker it is.

does anybody know if Criterion offers replacement cases? i bought "Following" at Barnes & Noble this week but when i got home & opened it i noticed the plastic wrap on the front is off-center and leaves the outer paper exposed along the bottom. there isn't another copy at the store to exchange it, so i wrote an e-mail to mulvaney@criterion.com but i haven't heard back for a few days now. anyone else ever had a similar issue?
