Yeah, I bought Le Samourai from Barnes and Noble, and it didn't have a booklet, so I emailed Criterion and they sent me a booklet!

L’avventura anyone recommend? I hear good things just curious what everyone on here thinks?
L'avventura was a challenging watch for me, yet when it was over I couldn't keep from thinking about it. It's obviously a beautiful film, with each shot being absolutely gorgeous. Then the characters, it's as if I was hypnotized into caring about them. I was always interested to see their next emotion and action.

I would say L'avventura is a very dark and surreal film. Surreal but very realistic. If you like dark dramas I highly recommend it. I'm positive almost everyone else on this thread will too.

On another note, I got La Notte during the sale and need to check it out. I'll get L'eclisse next.

I'll happily buy 4K + Blu-ray combo packs of future Criterion titles if they decide to release them as such, though.

I'm treating the rest of my collection the same way. I buy newer "from here on out" movies (La La Land, The Revenant, etc.) in 4K + Blu-ray combos, but my existing Blu-rays are the final versions of those movies in my collection.

...just because the thought of building up my movie collection all over again breaks my heart. I'm getting too old for that.
There are a few titles I would repurchase in 4K where there may some enhancement in landscapes or colors play such a major role (Malick - Days & New World, Walkabout, 3 Colors, Ran, Dreams, etc.) However, so many of the BDs (especially 4k scans of B&W's) are already incredible that I wouldn't notice a difference on my 60" 4K TV.

Going forward, I agree. I would also happily go dual format again.

I personally hated L'avventura. But I wouldn't let my opinion of it deter anyone from seeing or buying it, because so many people have embraced it as one of the all-time greatest and they seem to see a certain something in the cinematography and story I don't.

If you want the contrarian opinion, it would be this: I found it boring as hell. And my understanding is that it's supposed to be--it's the irony in the title that hardly anything happens and the movie is about a bunch of rich people suffering through the agony of boredom and isolation. It's not a drama I found personally compelling, so all of it fell flat with me.

I'd recommend trying before buying. Unless you've bought it already, in which case, good luck.

If you eager to discover another type of cinema,go ahead.

L'avventura is one of my favourite in the alienation tetralogy. It is a very compelling film, although it is slow. The performance of Monica Vitti is memorable, and you could see how Antonioni played with different types of cinematic techniques.

But I do recommend you to finish the whole alienation tetralogy. My favourite is Red Desert and L'avventura.Frankly I don't understand what is L'eclisse is talking about,La notte need a rewatch to judge it.Anyway,Alienation Tetralogy is a treasure and worth your time to watch them all and the extras in the discs will help you to understand more about the films

"L’avventura anyone recommend? I hear good things just curious what everyone on here thinks?"

One of my favorite movies, and one of my favorite Criterions. As other people said, it may not have the same narrative flow of other movies you're accustomed to, but neither do Fellini movies or Ozu movies or Bergman movies, and those are great Criterions too. I actually find L'avventura really interesting, and on some level even entertaining, and when you really dive into the style of it, and what he was trying to accomplish with it, I think it's an amazing movie. The cinematography and shot compositions are some of the best ever, and there are just certain sequences in it that will stay with you for a long time. The commentary is also very good if you're struggling to understand certain aspects of it -- it's a really in-depth essay that explains a lot of the movie and Antonioni himself. Hope you buy it! It's definitely worth seeing!

L'Avventura (1960) is one of them. Funny enough though, the first time I viewed the black and white Antonioni/Vitti trilogy, it was my least favorite of the three films! Now, I think it's Anotnioni's best film by a large margin (and this is coming from someone who loves all his work). As a side note, the picture and audio quality on the Criterion Blu-Ray is absolute perfection as well, so enjoy!
Oh man, I'm already pumped to view it now I can't get to B&N fast enough!

Ray did express his enthusiasm for "Nekromantik 2" in its thread recently, if I remember correctly, so I'm sure the love for "Weekend at Bernie's" love has something to do with the fact that it's a deep meditation on treating the deceased with humanity and compassion.

L'eclisse is my fav. of the trilogy but I love them all. Antonioni was a Deity! Love La Notta also & Red Desert. Anyone also have any love for Identification of a Woman?
