My four favorite films starring Moreau are Touchez Pas au Grisbi ("Hands off the Loot"), which is a cool-as-ice French gangster film, Elevator to the Gallows, which is a superb French film noir with an amazing Miles Davis score, The Bride Wore Black, which was the inspiration for Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill movies, and La Femme Nikita, which was one of the first foreign films that I saw many years ago.
I've only scratched the surface of her filmography, but she is pretty amazing in all of her movies that I've seen.

Too many great performances in so many great classics to list. Her resume speaks for itself.

True, but I'll list one more. She was heartbreaking in a small but important role in Monte Walsh.

R.I.P.

RIP Jeanne Moreau, what a great career, one of the best actresses in my opinion.

On a brighter note, Ozu's "Record of a Tenement Gentleman" had Criterion branding on it last night on TCM.

Watched Cat People last night (one of many blind buys from B&N). Enjoyed it but wasnt a favorite. I will say the use of sound and shadows is incredible. Visually such a beautiful movie!

God damn, does this one hit hard. Nothing digs deeper to the soul than Stanton and Kinski reciting the beautiful words of Mr. Shephard.

RIP Sam Shephard. You did so much for me.

Rest in peace, Sam Shepard.

I'll always remember Sam Shepard because of his role as Chuck Yeager in The Right Stuff (1983).

He also delivered great performances in Days of Heaven (1978), Raggedy Man (1981), All the Pretty Horses (2000), Black Hawk Down (2001), Mud (2012), Steel Magnolias (1989), The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007), and many others.

My favorite recent role of his, however, was in Cold in July (2014), which is one of the most criminally underrated movies of this decade.

Yeah Cold in July is one of the great new modern-day westerns. Love that movie from front to back. Still need to pick this up on Blu.

Agreed; for me, Chuck Yeager was his most memorable role.

A friend of mine, who bartended in New York, told me that Sam Shepard's favorite drink was Campari and bitters on the rocks. I might go to my favorite watering hole to have one in his honor tonight.

A great story regarding Sam Shepard's writing was the Pittsburgh Public Theater's 1980 production of his play Buried Child. The theater's artistic director took a chance on producing it, feeling that the Pittsburgh audience was ready for a play about the breakdown of traditional family structures and values set against the rural economic slowdown of the 1970's. After the play opened, the theater lost more than one quarter of its subscription base.

Another one with Shepard worth checking out is Robert Altman's "Fool for Love", which Sam wrote. It was based on his play. Very underrated film that Criterion should think about given they have released a lot of Altman.

You've sold me on Hands off the Loot and Elevator to the Gallows. Maybe Criterion will release these on blu-ray?

Elevator to the Gallows was one of the first Criterions I watched and have been waiting for the Blu ray ever since I switched over. It has been about a dozen years since that initial viewing. Hate to say it, but don't hold your breath unless there is renewed interest at Criterion because of her death.

I was also saddened by her death because of her huge influence and amazing roles she embodied.

Elevator and "Shoot the Piano Player" upgrades I have kind of given up on, and can't legitimise buying the DVDs.
