I'm curious: have Criterion ever re-released a film that IFC has already released? I know they've done that with a few mainstream releases like the Andersons, but what about more niche releases?

Betrand Bonello's Nocturama is getting a lot of buzz/praise with its theatrical release spreading right now—I saw it at a film festival earlier this year and it was my favorite of what I saw for the whole thing—and Bonello's previous critical darling, L'Apollonide (a.k.a. House of Tolerance a.k.a. House of Pleasure), was released by IFC on DVD only. I watched it last night, and it's a gorgeous film, so I'd love to see a blu-ray of it. Plus, Criterion recently tweeted an interview they did with the director...

Exactly. I can't be positive but I think I remember reading years ago that the elements for these flicks were toast. These have never looked even decent in any format. And sadly I don't think they ever will.

It would be nice if there were a label dedicated to refurbishing the old school Hong Kong titles in actual HD like so many indie horror films these days.70-90s Hong Kong is a landmine of amazing action films.

Alright, I'm not good at the whole "who has the rights/how likely is Criterion to release this?" game so I'm counting on my fellow forum folk to provide educated opinions.

What are the odds that Criterion releases Kogonada's Columbus?

Any chance this set gets an upgrade or any titles in it? I'm not interested in waiting for years though. At that point I'll just grab this set.

Titles since the pic is terrible[emoji6]
Samurai Rebellion
Series of the Beast
Samurai Spy
Kill!

I cannot answer your question, but have you seen it? I have tickets for this plus a Kogonada Q&A.

That will be awesome if that happens. I am surprised by the lack of talk about the film Columbus on this forum or anywhere online. I guess it is to be expected since it has opened in only a few cities so far. For me, it truly lived up to my expectations, which were quite high thanks to the outstanding reviews it has been receiving. It is opening wider this weekend so I hope more people will go see it.

Does anyone know what other Criterion videos has Kogonada produced besides the one on the Before Trilogy release?

I did! I ended up stuck in NYC for a day with nothing to do, so I figured the best use of my extra time was this film. It was a good choice.

What city are you doing the Q&A in?

I'm curious if Criterion will release Logan Lucky (very fun movie btw). Bleecker Street only distributed the film, and their films release through Universal at home. Soderbergh said he sold the pay TV rights to Amazon, yet Bleecker Street films are not with any streaming service or cable channel. This leads me to believe that he has full control over where the movie can end up on home video, and given how many of his films are in the collection, I think we might see Logan Lucky pop up in December or January. Thoughts?

Edit: Nope, Universal is releasing it. *sigh*

Amazon preorders can be canceled and Amazon has occasionally gone below the 50% mark on some Criterion titles. It's worth a shot.

Right. I just have to be vigilant, and watch the price.

It was almost an surreal moment as I pre-ordered Le Samourai.

and now I've this uneasy feeling of contentment...

Not sure if anything can top this release...

Probably the best year for Melville fans, especially with the UK boxset that's coming out later next month.

I have that down as part of my daily routine. Check prices in the "Saved for later" section of my cart, and pick them up at my target (or as close to). Particularly useful for Region B titles from Amazon UK, where prices can fluctuate considerably.

Reddington, it sounds like we're much alike. I obsessively check the newest deals page on our site 5 times a day, at least, look at price history on Camelizer, and I, too, have a bunch of films I've got saved for later in Amazon that I check almost every day. I've not done that for Amazon UK, however, and I really should. I haven't imported movies in a little while, and there are several Eureka releases I want. The Masters of Cinema line is a very close second studio/distributor for me, right behind Criterion. I love their presentation and, especially, their booklets.

I wonder what my 1,000th title will be. I'm getting very close.

If the Blu-ray of Le Samouraļ closely resembles the $3.99 HD rental on YouTube, I think fans will be happy.
