How does the download compare to the French Blu?

I've not done that for Amazon UK, however, and I really should. I haven't imported movies in a little while, and there are several Eureka releases I want. The Masters of Cinema line is a very close second studio/distributor for me, right behind Criterion. I love their presentation and, especially, their booklets.

I wonder what my 1,000th title will be. I'm getting very close.
Couldn't you guys just price track on this site and get notifications whenever something crosses the threshold you're willing to pay?

Probably the best year for Melville fans, especially with the UK boxset that's coming out later next month.
What U.K. box set? I seemed to have missed that.

Surprised there's no listing for the set here when it comes out very soon.

Yeah, I found it strange at first...

... but knowing just how StudioCanal tends to deal with world cinema titles it didn't seem too surprising after all.

Previously, they've delayed high profile films like La Strada by 2 weeks.

Hopefully, this boxset doesn't get pushed back.

I'm not sure as I never owned the French Blu-ray.

Here is a link to the film. You can get an idea from the preview.

Great Owl, I'm curious what your top 5 Criterion blu titles are?

Also, thanks for your consistently awesome reviews, opinions, and general commentary across the various threads of this site. Your contributions are part of the reason I enjoy visiting here each day. Cheers!

I saw Stalker yesterday for the first time. It did not disappoint. Definitely an essential film in the CC, IMO.

I watched my copy the other day. I thought it was a surreal mind-bending spiritual trip. I got alot out of it and look forward to watching it again.

Now I need to pop in that Solaris blu-ray I bought a few weeks ago.

It was the 4th Tarkovsky film I've seen. Probably the best of the 4, although the more conventional Ivan's Childhood is really good, too.

I'd like to re-visit Solaris. I admired it, but didn't feel the 'greatness' so much.

Nostalgia was the 4th. Similar vibe to Stalker but a little more ambiguous and not quite as good. Hypnotic and engaging, though.

I just finished Scorsese's Last Temptation of Christ. This was my first time seeing it. I had seen it playing on Starz back in the late nineties but I was just a kid and passed over it.

Being something like an adult now I wanted to watch it. Well, I did, and I really enjoyed it. When a movie is over 160 minutes long and doesn't feel like it, you know your captivated, and I was.

A couple things I really found interesting were the relationship between Jesus & Judas, and the
[Show spoiler]the form of Satan at the end.

[Show spoiler]Was he dreaming or not?
Don't answer that. Naw, you can if you want to. I say he was...but then maybe he wasn't.

Excellent film. I guess maybe I've matured, "a little bit, a little bit."

Thanks for the kind words!

Here are my top 10 Criterion titles, off the top of my head (because it's difficult to list just five)...

1. Le Samouraï (DVD, soon to be out on Blu-ray)
2. Army of Shadows
3. Le Cercle Rouge
4. In a Lonely Place
5. The Night of the Hunter
6. The Vanishing
7. Sweet Smell of Success
8. Paris, Texas
9. The Asphalt Jungle
10. Night and the City

My list leans heavily toward noir titles, but that's how I roll. Seven Samurai is a near miss, as is Harakiri.

I really hope that the upcoming Le Samouraï Blu-ray sports a good transfer, but, as long as it's better than the DVD, it will top my Blu-ray list. Right now, it's my favorite Criterion title across the board, just on the strength of the movie as is on DVD.

The Third Man used to be high up on my Criterion top 10 list, but the newer StudioCanal Blu-ray with the 4K restoration edges out the Criterion now.

Wow, thanks for the thoughtful reply Great Owl!

I'm slightly ashamed to admit that of your list I've only seen The Vanishing and Seven Samurai, but my tastes are maturing and I intend to correct this in the coming months.

I watched the trailer for Le Samouraï and I'm very intrigued! I hope the blu meets your expectations.

Thanks again and good luck in the future!

Found Canoa used on eBay for a reasonable price. Took the leap based solely on the member a few pages back who was raving about it. Can't wait to check it out.

The last few days have been a roller coaster for me.

I've been feeling a lot of mixed emotions about the Le Samourai announcement.

On one hand, it's the greatest thing that's happened in my life since Axl Rose gave me the finger at a Guns N Roses concert in 1993. I mean he actually looked right at me and acknowledged who I was...if only to express his complete disdain for my existence. For the first time in my life I felt like I was somebody.

On the other hand, what else is there to look forward to in this godforsaken world full of Michael Bay and Justin Bieber?

"Alexander wept when he saw Le Samourai on blu-ray...for there were no more worlds left to conquer."

...benefits of a classical education.
