Nah, they lost the rights to like 40 of them, plus they said that most will not be re-released on Blu. They see it as an improvment on the existing collection, not a starting over point.

Though it wouuld be nice...

ragggggggh

I can't not buy the remaining criterion blus I'm missing at that price.

and I can't ignore the 3 or 4 asolute must own criterion dvds I can get from barnes and noble.

and yet at the same time, I'm going away this week and am hesitant to spend the money.

sorry if I'm asking for info that's already out there but do we know when either of these sales will end? I know amazon usually doesn't share that stuff but if B&N did then Iknow how long I have. looking at around $200 if I get all I want... well, if I get all I can justify.

I actually used deep discount with 25% off code and signed up with Bing for 4% cash back. They deposit the cashback in paypal, it's quick and easy. Not commitments. So I ended up getting all 14 releases for 17.85 per movie

Just buy them, the more you think about it the more you're going to talk yourself out of it, then you'll be upset when the sale ends. at least that's how I am...
Good lord, I've spen nearly $125 in store already, then I'm planning on dropping between $150 and $200 online, depending on how all the coupons and discounts work out! So, you sir, should not feel bad.
There was even a point where I was working the math out on buying EVERYTHING...I'd have to give up on my dream of home-ownership, so that plan went down the tubes.

Great news on the Criterion sale! I just dropped the hammer on Repulsion, The Seventh Seal, and For All Mankind. This will be my first order from the US Amazon site in a long time, but at $19.99 USD, it still blows the $37 CDN price tag that Amazon.ca is asking for these titles out of the water(even after the import fee and exchange rate). Looking forward to expanding my collection of older movies.

By the way, I just read that Brian Eno did the score on For All Mankind , and that fact alone was enough for me to pull the trigger.

I can't wait to view this documentary, all reviews are great as you would expect. Now begins the waiting game!

For Barnes & Noble, I believe the sale ends August 2nd.

thanks be to you, sir.

I feel safe in assuming amazon will keep its prices down until the same date.

August 2nd is absolutely correct, for the B&N sale.

Oh, and even though no one has seemed to care in the Screenshots thread, yet, I took some real quick handheld shots, directly from my display with a 12.1 megapixels digital cam. Three shots from The Third Man and four from The Seventh Seal. I picked both up from Barnes & Noble.

Here's the link to the screens:
Third Man and Seventh Seal screens

I sold some video games and got enough Amazon GC balance to order 5 more of the Criterions: The Wages of Fear, The 400 Blows, El Norte, Last Year at Marienbad and In the Realm of the Senses. I'll try to snap some screens from them at some point, also.

I'm waiting for a refund from Amazon (for some reason they signed me up for the full Prime membership after the free trial). Planning to get: "The Seventh Seal", "Wages of Fear" and "Repulsion" ASAP.

Three European black-and-white classics.

Ahhh, this sale has really drained my wallet. I'm posting my list of buys later this evening, because I'm at freaking work again today.

Found this on Wiki, don't know if it's news or not (It was to me):
"Image Entertainment has acquired the DVD release rights to four Jeremy Thomas-produced films, including Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence and Insignificance. Image will release movie-only versions, while Criterion (distributed by Image) will release full special editions as part of its regular collection.[1] People on Sunday was announced on the Criterion Collection Web site,[2] as well as Gotz Spielmann's crime drama Revanche, which will be joining the collection upon its initial American home video release.[3]"

Thumbs up

A little late on this one, but I'm so surprised at how great The Seventh Seal looks. Don't know what that one guy awhile ago was complaining about in regards to film grain. I thought it looked even better than Third Man and 400 Blows.

I bought Bottle Rocket and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Won't have access to my HDTV until the 31st so hopefully I'll watch the movies then. I love Bottle Rocket's art and packaging!

I did it. I ordered the 6 I don't have to complete my blu criterion collection. prices will simply not ever be better.

I also have the next three releases preordered.

I also want to throw together a barnes and noble order, but I decided I'm only buying discs I know I love because anytime I go for a dvd today, even a criterion, the last think I want is a disappointment. I'll be getting

Le Samurai
Seven Samurai
The Bicycle Thieves
My Own Private Idaho

and maybe Stray Dog. unfortunately their website is out of le samurai so I can't just do the order right now... I'm gonna head to a nearby store that should have it tomorrow. might do the whole order there (although the store is also out of the bicycle thieves so I have to do at least a small order... might be doable at the store) and just get it done.

and it doesn't ruin my budget for this trip. as long as I don't eat in Toronto :P

So.....if the Barnes & Noble sales runs until August 2nd (and presumably Amazon's will too) is there any chance of the August titles being available for pre-order at $19.99
Repulsion was.
