Five Criterion titles that I would like to see upgraded to Blu-ray...

Brute Force
Thieves Highway
Pickup on South Street
Elevator to the Gallows
Touchez Pas Au Grisbi

Just because I cannot stop there, I'll continue with five more...

The Naked City
Le Trou
Le Doulos
Le Deuxième Souffle
Bob Le Flambeur

Akira Kurosawa's Stray Dog would be nice as well.

I have a list at home, but four that spring to mind are Red Beard, Winter Light, White Dog, and Andrei Rublev. I've been waiting on those for years.

Had a few beers last night and impulse bought a brand new copy of Playtime last night. Not sure what I am in for but I am feeling kind of giddy.

I am hesitant to read any reviews to see if I made a mistake or not. I have never seen a Tati film, and I have very little experience with French Film outside of Army of Shadows and the 400 blows.

The only sense in which it might be a mistake is that the "Complete Tati boxset" has the superior transfer to the "Playtime" standalone. (On the other hand, there is a passionate minority of fans who prefer the color scheme there.)

As far as the movie goes, you're in for an experience. I wouldn't necessarily recommend starting with "Playtime", but I started that way and it worked for me.

Well today I rewatched Playtime on the projector which is as close as I assume I will get to watch it as it was intended and it was glorious, all the things from his previous films I liked still apply but the quality of the image looks so pristine it gives it another dimension to the visuals and better audio which only intensified the things I liked on previous ones, also I think it's gags are funnier.

It's quite clear the evolution of Tati watching the films in order, so I am afraid that is why there is much less love for Trafic since I assume at his pace it might be too abstract for my taste, Playtime has just the right balance for me but I think big part is it's for it's audio and visual qualities.

Just watch it on the largest screen you have available to you.

It was shot in 70mm, and there are numerous instances of multiple gags happening on screen simultaneously. It can be easy to think nothing's happening on first viewing when really three things are happening at once, but they're subtle visual gags at different depths of the "stage" that only take up a small amount of space on screen. The opening scene kinda "teaches" you how to watch for things: be sure to shift focus, to the foreground and background, left and right. Playtime is one of the most rewarding movies to watch repeatedly for that reason.

I second Virgin Spring. Watched it on FilmStruck thinking there was a blu Ray for it but was disappointed to find there isn't.

Playtime is an amazing film. Very beautiful. And very funny. The restaurant scene is as stupendous as anything from Chaplin or Keaton.

The Spirit of the Beehive
Hobson's Choice
My Man Godfrey
