If Criterion can get back Spinal Tap and do a new transfer on the original short, it would be worth the upgrade. The DVD also had some variation in the deleted scenes (maybe 15-20 minutes, spread all through it, is exclusive). I think it's likely they will re-release This Is Spinal Tap, but I don't think it will happen before the lawsuit between the band and the film's owners is resolved.

Very interesting reading. While I had a couple of the older Criterion DVD's, & just recently upgraded to the boxset, my first experience of these films was of course seeing them in the cinema. Perhaps a different experience to binge watching the box set.
I re-watched Playtime this evening, after seeing the mention of it here earlier. It certainly rewards repeat viewings, but perhaps either Mon Oncle or Monsiuer Hulot's Holiday are better for first time Tati viewers?

edit: Also interesting viewing is the 2010 animated film The Illusionist based upon an unproduced Tati screenplay.

I usually suggest folks start with M. Hulot's Holiday in the Tati box, going forward from there and looping back around. I think Jour de Fete is more appreciable when you can position it between where Tati was going afterwards, with M. Hulot, and where he was coming from, with vaudeville and mime as demonstrated in Parade. I don't think either Jour... or Parade are great movies, but if you've already fallen in love with Tati like you should have by Playtime, they're much more enjoyable for what they are.

And just for the record, I think Trafic is only a slightly lesser work than Playtime; Tati loosens the reigns a little compared to the grandiose, clockwork precision of his masterpiece, but it's evidence of a confidence whose breathing room allows a different emphasis on his style of physical comedy, calling back to the irruptive chaos of Holiday. I think I'm going to go watch it now to see whether I still think that!

  • Dragon Inn - King Hu
  • The Goalie's Anxiety at the Penalty Kick - Wim Wenders
  • The Lower Depths - Jean Renoir

I don't know how this website is curated as it does not include every blu-ray and dvd release Criterion has put out. I guess the films listed on the Janus website have had some sort of theatrical release at some point. This is my first time going through the site so some of these may have been mentioning a blu-ray release for years for all I know, but some of those are new theatrical releases like Night of the Living Dead and The Other Side of Hope, so I guess we can look forward to at least those two being announced for 2018.
Tokyo-ga is on the Late Spring blu-ray.

I now have 17 CC titles and as such, often think to myself, "Those TT fools over in the other thread believe they're all that, what with spending all their hard earned cash on a BD release they could easily find a foreign copy of, for cheaper." Please tell me I'm not the only one who has noticed this.

Two M. Hulot picture/comic books, I recently bought them for my kids as an introduction. I'll be sitting them down soon to watch his first short films and then Les Vacances de M. Hulot.

EDIT: Oh, and the Pierre Etaix set should be mandatory for Tati fans, in case anyone missed it. They collaborated on Mon Oncle (I think it was) and one scene from Mon Oncle was devised entirely by Etaix. They're quite similar in their style. Wonderful stuff!

At least The Testament of Dr. Mabuse was not listed as blu-ray last time I checked, so that's good news.

What kind of case does ‘Au Revoir Les Enfants’ come in? Like a standard plastic criterion case or like the digibook ones? With a paper slip cover?

It comes in the Scanavo case.

Criterion forum reviews always show the packaging in great detail, for future reference.

Who owns the US Blu-ray rights to Fallen Angels and Happy Together? I believe the Kino releases are out of print. Any chance of Criterion releases, given their previous interest in Kar-wai?

Upgrades I'd like (way more than 5, why not?):
Z
Mishima
Spirit of the Beehive
The Lady Eve
The Phantom of Liberty (How awesome would it be if CC got the rights to this again?)
Secret Honor (DVD looks terrible)
The Ruling Class (DVD also looks terrible)
Stranger Than Paradise
Man Bites Dog
I Vitteloni
The Devil and Daniel Webster (So underappreciated)
Dillinger is Dead (true mindf**k of a film)
Homicide (Joe Mantegna knocks it out of the park in this film. Should have won Best Actor that year, not that it really matters.)
Europa
Blast of Silence
Kicking and Screaming (This film still cracks me up, particularly Chris Eigeman. "Go away, Cookie Man.")
Schizopolis
Death of a Cyclist
This Sporting Life
Fists in the Pocket (Never hear people mention this one. It's a great film.)
Elevator to the Gallows
And, finally, one of Ray Jackson's personal favorites...SWEET MOVIE

Chungking Express, Fallen Angels, and Happy Together have long been available on Filmstruck with Criterion branding so it's been rumored that they will be released in a box set.

However, a while back, when Hulu still had Criterion, Jacques Demy's The Pied Piper was on their chanel with Criterion branding but was eventually released on blu by Kino so it's mot necessarily a 100% guarantee. (I believe Model Shop was also available in the Hulu days but now it's nowhere to be found)

Perhaps next year Criterion could surprise us with a Ingmar Bergman boxset!

I'm a bit shocked that apart from Persona; these films still don't have a Blu-ray release.

... So does MGM still retain rights to Shame, Hour of the Wolf, The Passion of Anna & The Serpent's Egg?

A Criterion blu-ray edtion of 2001 will happen before that happens, Jock.

Would rather the Faith Trilogy get upgraded first, although Shame is an incredible movie

You seem to be devoting a lot of energy to convincing me that it's possible that WB will license "2001" to Criterion, now following me into another thread to continue. Perhaps you should put some of that energy towards contacting people at Warner about it, if it means that much to you. I promise you that no amount of arguing with me on the Internet is going to convince them.
