A bit off topic:

RIP Tony Curtis.

Curtis was THE Shell Oil Junior in Wilder's masterwork Some Like it Hot.

Curtis is also in soon-to-be Criterion title Sweet Smell of Success.

I'm pleasantly surprised. I thought the black cover was the actual case.

He was also the object of Laurence Olivier's desire in Spartacus :]

So many excellent new releases. I'm taking a day off from work in couple weeks to catch up.

Besides the Criterions there are two Huston pictures from WB (10/5) and Apocalypse Now in a few weeks.

Good times

For those that have seen both versions of The Last Emperor....how much different is the tv version? Is it an improvement? I cant decide if I want to get the blu and miss out on the tv version if it does add depth to the characters, story and is an improvement. Of if I should just get the blu because it is an unnecessary cut

Just remember that the extended tv version was only a contractuable obligation. The theatrical cut on the blu-ray is Bertolucci’s preferred cut.

I know it's almost sickening. My wife is going out of town for a week so I'll be catchin' up on some major Criterion Collection watching.

Here's what I have to catch up on:

Charade
Watch the rest of Days of Heaven (it's old I know! I've had it for a while and haven't had the chance to watch all of it.)
By Brakhage
The Leopard
Red Desert
The Red Shoes
Ride with the Devil
Stagecoach

Watched The Thin Red Line yesterday and it was phenomenal! I got chills at the end when the "Melanesian Dance" started playing. IMO I've never witnessed a better track.

Days of Heaven is immaculate on Blu-ray.

I haven't viewed The Red Shoes on BR yet only because it showed at the local cinema days before the BR release. I'll get to it again soon.

The Magician - Review (courtesy of Home Theater Forum)

I haven't seen the film yet but folks at CF would not agree with the reviewer calling this "lesser Bergman".

Concerning The Killing of a Chinese Bookie:

I just got this from the university library, and i'm wondering which cut will be more worth the watch, as I probably wont have time to see both this weekend. At this time I'm more inclined to watch the shorter director's cut, as it seems thats the one that people respond more positively to.
Sorry that this isn't exactly a blu ray question, but this seemed like a good place to ask.

The shorter one sucks. Takes away the "Cassavetes" feel of the film. Watch the 1976 version. I don't know where you got the "people respond more to the 78' rerelease" from unless it was from people who haven't seen both. But to be serious, this is a rerelease that changes a movie's tone big time. Turns a Cassavetes movie into another 70's Mean Streets type gangster flick.

Would you want to see a movie in it's original form, or a highly edited rerelease?

That's some serious watching alright! By Brakhage has taken me SEVERAL viewings, and I have barely scratched the surface..... lots of material, and I feel like I'm doing it an injustice by cramming a lot of it in at once...... It's great to watch a short bit, and then go back and re-visit.

Well in that case, thank goodness my wife won't be around for a few days to sit next to me on the couch and say, "I wanna watch Glee, or some of my stupid recorded shows like Say Yes to the Dress! Blah blah!" lol!

...hope she doesn't read this.

Definitely agree with this. The short one is nowhere near as good and, bizzarely, I actually find it incredibly dull, making it somehow feel longer than the long version. It also somewhat loses that "gangster as struggling artist" theme that I like in the longer version. Incredibly underrated film, btw.

Agree. After I seen the shorter one, I haven't watched it since. I always watch the 1976 version alot.

My two week vacation starts after next week. Really don't have the money for a big vacation so I imagine I'll spend a cople days doing a Blu-Ray movie marathon with my home theater. Probably watching a good chunk of Criterions in there.

Anyone see the film review for Godard's Film Socialsme over at Criterion Cast? Ouch...

http://criterioncast.com/2010/09/27/...iew/#more-7197

Quote:
This is Godard’s 27th film he has shown at the New York Film Festival. His last, most probably. And I truly believe this is the final nail in the coffin of the French New Wave. With Claude Chabrol dying recently, Francois Truffaut since 1984, and this film being shown, it’s truly dead in my eyes. What we have is his earlier works, works of genius that show such life, such joy, such enthusiasm and were the cornerstones of the future of cinema. With Film Socialsme, we have such pretension on screen, if I didn’t know it was Mr. Godard himself that made this, I would have thought a fresh new film maker trying to annoy and enrage an audience made this film. But at 79 years old, it seems as if Godard has degenerated as a film maker.

This is one film I can’t recommend to anyone, even my worst enemy. This review almost feels like an obituary for Jean-Luc Godard. Perhaps for Godard’s film career. This is a film I can’t see in the Criterion Collection. I appreciate (and sometimes love) difficult films. Last Year at Marienbad and Salo as two examples are both films that strain the senses but are artistic, in your face and in the end tell a story to the audience. Even when one doesn’t quite get it, you can see some sense of storytelling within the both of them.
