Yeah one of the bonuses on the Casablanca BluRay best sums it up: Michael Curtiz - The Greatest Director You Never Heard Of". It's a shame he isn't mentioned more among the greats from his days in Europe to Hollywood.

Mike Leigh signed my copy of Naked at a screening of Life is Sweet.

I received a couple of brand new Criterions a few days ago, and both are sealed in that heat sealed stuff, instead of proper cellophane. Neither of them have the blue circular sticker on the outside either. Is this normal, or are these likely to have been resealed, so possibly returned stock?

There has been plenty of speculation about this, although I have never read a definitive explanation.

There are those that swear blind that cellophane with "folded" corners (with/without blue sticker) indicates brand new, whereas the tighter shrinkwrap indicates a returned disc or "re-wrap" (this charge is most frequently leveled at US retailer Barnes & Noble, due the volume of discs it sells during biannual 50% off sales).

I have bought titles directly from Criterion during flash sales that have either cellophane with/without sticker, or shrinkwrap. And I have bought many titles from B&N that have been shrinkwrapped and are flawless when opened.

Early days, but this set is starting to look very impressive. (I've never seen the Sapporo film, and the screengrabs suggest it is essential viewing). Very much looking forward to receiving my copy on Day 1.

Thanks for that, I wasn't really sure. Unfortunately the paper covers look like they've taken a bit of a beating, lots of indents in them from the case, maybe they were stacked with a lot of other cases on top of them, or it's just the mail system that's done it.

Cases are a different story. I have had some issues, mostly with in-store purchases. I always inspect each title thoroughly - especially for the indents you mention. Unfortunatley, not possible when ordering online.

You've probably read here that Criterion are quite helpful with replacement "parts" if you ask nicely in an email.

For those that haven't seen them, there have been several complaints about Criterion's release of Certain Women. Several noting bad quality, and flickering throughout the film. It is unknown whether this is a source issue, or some sort of mastering error, but I would personally recommend holding off on purchasing this title for the time being until we hear back from Criterion.

What would be a good email address to use? I would like to raise this issue with them.

This is usually where complaints are sent to: mulvaney@criterion.com

I'm sorry if this has already been addressed in the last few days, but have there been any rumors of when the next 24-hour flash sale is happening? I've read it's supposed to be early October (at least it was in the past). I'd imagine it's coming soon, so I just want to make sure I'm prepared.

It'll be in October, and you'll see a slew of posts prior to the sale, both from people like you and those noticing some slight alterations in the site that tend to indicate the sale in the subsequent days.

They tend to correspond with a new release, so mid-month seems likely, as they have Othello on 10/10 and Barry Lyndon on 10/17. I'd bet they want to include Barry, so I'm anticipating some time in the middle of the third week.

I noticed those comments in the Certain Woman forum...damn that's a shame, I got it from Amazon last week and have been super-pumped to see this film since last fall when it was in very limited theatrical release and I haven't had a chance to see it until now (huge Kelly Reichardt fan)...and then I hear all this terrible feedback about it. I'll see for myself with my disc, but I'm prepared to complain to Criterion if I encounter the same issues. I've never had any issues with their releases before.

Nice, that is seriously one of my favorite all-time movies.

It's such a favorite of mine that I once memorized a near 2 minute monologue from the film, in that long scene with Johnny and the security guard.

I performed that monologue for an acting class. Just after my performance in class, a friend recorded me saying it out loud in a park on one cold Winter day. I ended up talking to a tree (instead of the security guard) in that scene I re-enacted. I raced through it though...however, I have the actual scene from the acting class which I will upload in time.

This was about 2 years ago.

Check it out below! (any Brits here? Please let me know if my Manchester accent was passable?) ... also, while you're at it, please subscribe to my channel! Thanks!

I took this from the scene here (starting at 43 seconds!):

If its after Barry then I'll make myself wait, though I prefer it to be as early as possible say after Othello. Earlier the sale makes it easier for me to plan my film balance for the month.

A screening of Come and See was just announced by the Aero in Santa Monica, and it is presented by Janus! So what many have suspected and hoped for seems to be confirmed!

It's too bad "Come and See" won't be released by this Christmas. I'd love to sit down and watch it with the family for that holiday cheer!
