But to be serious, this is a rerelease that changes a movie's tone big time. Turns a Cassavetes movie into another 70's Mean Streets type gangster flick.

Would you want to see a movie in it's original form, or a highly edited rerelease?
I've seen the film discussed at places like Mubi where it seems like more often then not people say the 135 minute cut feels overlong, while the trimmed one is better. But, I'll watch the longer cut since you and cdnchris seem to strongly endorse it. I'll give it a shot Saturday or Sunday. Thanks

Agreed. By Brakhage is probably my favorite thing in the whole collection, but I think its important to not watch too much at once. Theres typically a lot to take in with Brakhage. I get burnt out if I see too much of his stuff at once.

I'm curious, when do you guys watch the supplements on these movies?

It's hard enough for me to find the time to watch all the different movies I buy, and rent from Netflix, let alone dig through hours of supplements right after I finish watching a movie.

Do you just cherry pick movies that you love, or do you watch the supplements on every single film you buy/rent?

That's my issue too. I rarely watch the supplements because I have so many unwatched movies (I'd rather watch a movie I haven't watched yet than watch supplements) and it's very rare with a movie that, after watching it, I have interest in watching the supplements.

I cherry pick, since that is what you call it. I watch all of the features on my favs, and if I have extra time in a day, I'll look through my collection, and if I'm interested in learning more about a movie, I'll pop it in.

Yea, I'm pretty much the same way. I have to either: a) really like a movie, or b) wanna learn more about that movie.

Although with Criterion's extras, there's almost always interesting stuff that adds to the film and gives you a better/different perspective. Which kinda stinks, because it makes me want to watch all of them. That's definitely not the case with about 80% of Non-Criterion titles I buy.

Also, it doesn't hurt if it's a shorter extra, that I can watch quickly

I saw Film Socialisme at the Toronto International Film Festival. It really was Godard spitting in your face the entire time.

I do wonder though, if these so called "reviewers" has seen any of Godard's video work before this film? I mean it's nothing new. I just don't get it.

What I think went down is New Godard fans went and saw his New movie and thought they will see an update of what they have seen so far (Breathless, etc).

Either way, I will see the movie (if it comes out in a U.S. release) and judge myself. Thanks critics and reviewers, but your jobs mean nothing to me. Unless they want to start making movies...........

I have seen the film and would like to point out a couple of things:

1. Film socialisme does have a structure as well as rhythm - both very similar to those witnessed in Notre musique. The symbolism, however, is not as well defined.

2. Unless I read a different "review", the one linked in this thread does not contain an analysis of the film - probably because it is easier to "review" something you don't understand this way, by producing a personal statement of discontent.

That's what I thought. Thanks Pro-B. The only reviewer I actually read.

Wow...I've lucked out 2 weeks in a row with getting new releases to rent (NetFlix), during the week they were released.

Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence for the weekend...

In The Realm Of The Senses didn't do it for me, so I want to watch a few more Oshima films before I make any judgement calls.

Besides...David Bowie and Tom Conti...should prove to be interesting!

Yeah they confirmed this and the Rock Hunter release would be coded. I can understand the coding for Make Way... I could see Criterion doing this on blu sometime... but the Rock Hunter title FOX will never release that in the US like that. I love those covers for the releases though.

I think buying The Thin Red Line on DVD is illegal in some states.

Can't wait to watch the BR tonight!

Default Barnes & Noble Sale

Barnes & Noble has done 50% off sales on Criterion in May and November. Has anyone heard from B&N if they are doing a sale this (2010) November?

I have Seven Samurai pre-ordered from Amazon @ $34.99. At 50% off list price, it would be $24.49 at B&N. I don't want to cancel the Amazon order until I'm convinced that B&N will have a November sale.

Does anyone actually have confirmation?

You have to wait until November for confirmation. Now go away and don't come back until then.

Zip has mailed me this as well, but for new Criterion Blu-ray releases (including this one) I typically specifically request it, which costs me C$5. That's a price I'm willing to pay.

Now if only Zip also mails me my requests for Thin Red Line and Charade!
