Really surprised they aren't going to stock the title. Usually it will at least say Coming Soon. It could change who knows. They don't even list The Magician at all. Seven Samurai seems to have the same fate currently!
Didn't you hear that Best Buy is going to be cutting back even more on their floor space for disc-based media by the holidays?

Weird. Physical media is going nowhere. If they'd just lower their prices to a reasonable level they'd sell more. It's not rocket science. I buy 90%+ of my electronics from Amazon and other online retailers because they're cheaper.

Yeah, it's weird thinking that one day physical media will pretty much be non-existent, especially if you've grown up on it as much as most of us have.

I know streaming Criterion-released films is already here through Netflix and Hulu and I'm sure others, but I dread the day when that's my only option to see the films... and all of the booklets will be PDF downloads from the internet.

I really have a hard time believing this will happen. I believe, and hope, that physical media will exist for a long time. I think it's hard to convince people to pay for something they don't physicall own. At least that's the case for me. I'm going to keep physical media alive by buying it and refusing to pay for digital media when possible.

Thread related, I'm currently watching The Thin Red Line, it is beautiful. This is the first time I've seen it so I don't really know what to expect.

That's the day I fly out to Las Vegas and begin an increasingly hedonistic and self-destructive lifestyle that soon departs me from this planet.

There was a similar line of thinking that businesses would one day go paperless. Well I work in the financial field and can tell you we use more paper than ever before. My guess is the market for electronic downloads will reach a moderate level but will not overtake physical media anytime soon.

Sony tried the whole "download only" idea with the "PSP Go" and it's pretty much been a bust. Bottom line is people like physical stuff. Heck check out the community galleries on this website and you'll see people love physical media. I'm looking at you Kndy!

I'm posting this here because I wasn't allowed to create a new topic. I am going to buy one of the following Criterion releases: 8 1/2, Seventh Seal, Days of Heaven, or Paris, Texas. Which one is the best? In terms of the film itself and the supplements quality. Which is the second best?

Also, is the case exchange program a way for me to get a plastic case for my copy of The Last Emperor blu-ray? Thanks for the help guys!

That is a pretty varied list. All I can really say is that Paris, Texas is the movie on that list that initially engaged me the least while I watched it the first time, but I think about the most after the fact.

I fear I'm little help, but there you go for what it is worth.

My opinion is to go for 8 1/2 first, followed by The Seventh Seal second. Those two are the real standouts of those four. They are also two that I need to get myself.

And yes. The case exchange program is a way to get a plastic case for your movie. I have a cardboard case for The 400 Blows but I really don't mind it.

The Seventh Seal has fantastic extras (including an 83 minute documentary on Bergman) and is one of my favorite films, so I would have to go with that.

Days of Heaven and Paris, Texas are great films. I prefer Days of Heaven, but Paris, Texas has a better supplemental suite. If you're unfamiliar with Malick's style, then I don't think Days of Heaven is a good blind-buy.

Haven't seen 8 1/2.

Hunger (Criterion)

Director: Steve McQueen
Writer: Enda Walsh and Steve McQueen
Mains: Michael Fassbender, Stuart Graham, and Rory Mullen

Steve McQueen's Disturbing Masterpiece

Hunger is a compelling, disturbing, beautiful but horrifying movie of an Irish Prison housing an inmate who will make the ultimate sacrifice (Hunger Strike) for a positive political change with the legal system. Be warned this movie is very disturbing!

Its crazy how Steve McQueen pulled of this amazing movie! Its uncut and unrated for sure! The message in this movie might be a little to much for me, in saying that this might be a every 2 year movie for me. Its simply too much for my eyes and brain to handle.

Great movie, excellent story, superb direction and one of the most gruesome experience to date!

If you can stomach it this movie comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDED by yours truly!

5/5

When it comes to disturbing movies this is probably number 1! This makes The Road look like the Wizard of Oz when it comes to being disturbing!

If 8 1/2 is your first Fellini film, I really wouldn't recommend it. If you are familiar with him, though, it's a must-watch and would be my number one pick of those.

Seventh Seal is however a great starting point if you want to get into Bergman.

Looking over your collection, however, I think Days of Heaven is a no-brainer, if you only can pick one.

I was a very unsure I'd like Hunger when I first heard about it's release. Naked dudes in prison starving themselves and smearing crap all over walls was not something I was sure I'd like. Thankfully I bought it blind and really enjoyed it.
