I always thought that Pauline Kael was gratuitously snide, derisive and obnoxious in many of her bad reviews.

If it's that easy for you to tear down a film that someone else invested years of their time to making, then maybe you should write or direct a movie of your own.

...If you think filmmaking is so simple as to warrant scorn and mockery when someone's work doesn't live up to your lofty standards.

Better than I had expected. Young Mr. Lincoln and The Breakfast Club for me, the former having more urgency than the latter right now.

Like i said, I don't mean to be a downer, I'm sharing for the benefit of those who are expecting it. Take it for what it's worth (which considering for most of you I'm just a random internet stranger I realize may not be much). I don't actually know what the issue was, just that they thought it was good to go, and then not so much.

It wouldn't be the first time they worked on a release they thought was in the bag and had the rug pulled out from under them. I think they even had a release date for the Ran blu before that fell apart, didn't they?

I was only comparing one aspect of their criticism. I never said anything about depth, or anything else.

I think that talk is mere speculation or perhaps a distraction.

They can't work on it (restoration, color grading) without acquiring rights from Universal.

With Ran it was more to do with their issues with StudioCanal.

I don't know about Ran, but I find it hard to believe they were given the files to work on it without the rights in place, and you really haven't made a compelling argument for your sources.

I dunno, Ray. I think he came across as a bit stiff.

I'm the type of Criterion consumer who supports (in my case) double dips on titles like "The Breakfast Club". But Criterion doesn't make it easy when they don't port over all the special features from the previous disc.

As far as I can tell, at the very least "The Most Convenient Definitions: The Origin's of the Brat Pack" didn't make it over. Also Criterion lists "Documentary from 2015 featuring interviews with cast and crew" as one of the features, which I'm pretty sure isn't "Sincerely Yours: A 12 part Documentary" that was on the last disc. (But I could be wrong.) I don't mind doing my part by double dipping, but Criterion has to do their part as well by making it the definitive edition. I don't want to own 2 Blu Rays of the same movie just for a couple special features.

I second that request! Eyes Wide Shut would become my favorite all time Criterion if they release it. That movie is as rewatchable as it gets.

As for the January announcements, I am quite pleased to see The Breakfast Club getting into the Criterion Collection! An 80's classic! Being born in 1978, I remember first seeing this film in the late 80s and I'll never forget it.

Psyched to see the extra 50 minutes of unreleased footage accompanying this release. Can't wait!

Ah, so - it's not really overrated or in any way comparable to Armageddon, it's just that it's politically incorrect!

Unhappy

Upon today's announcements, I did sense a displeasure here.

It's no secret that many don't think much of Hughes.

Despite our different tastes, I thought we were once very accepting of each other.

Guess, it's true what Allison said...

The Breakfast Club is a classic and is absolutely deserving of a Criterion release. Anyone who doesn't think so either grew up before or after that specific era. If it only works for that particular audience, so be it - the same can be said for many Criterion films that target even narrower niches.

I loved Weekend at Bernies as a kid. Has it held up? Who knows. Worthy of Criterion? LOL, but I'd buy it day one!

As Pauline Kael deftly put it, it's about a bunch of stereotypes who complain that other people see them as stereotypes.

Also, considering the film's notoriously-dubious sexual politics, I would have found, say, A Face in the Crowd a release much more in tune with the current zeitgeist. (Although, acknowledging the myriad of "unseen" factors which help determine the timing of a title's release on disc, I'll admit that such a complaint maybe amounts to little more than whining on my part.)
I'm not a big fan of Molly Ringwald as an actress, so any film with her is never going to be among my favorites. Again, though, I suppose if someone was coming of age when Ringwald was big, he or she probably views her differently. I think the Estevez and Hall characters are by far the most fleshed out and you can see them actually changing because clearly both have room to grow as human beings. Those two characters are examples of Hughes' writing as its best.

Bender, on the other hand, is such an un-relenting prick that it's completely unbelievable that he would be changed by a day in detention. If you had to spend a day with that guy, the reaction 99% of people would have would be, "I hope that dude gets shot into the sun," not let's have a heart to heart with a guy who'll probably be serving time in a few years. He's going to wake up the next day and still be the same guy.

But yeah, I think many of us who were in high school, or around that age when stuff like The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles came out probably do have a different opinion.

ETA: How in the name of all that's pink did I not mention Pretty in Pink?!?! Jeez, I clearly need some sleep.

A fundamental (and simplistic) missing of the actual point.

Yes, they act like stereotypes.
Yes, they see each other as stereotypes.

It's the time spent together that reveals more about who they are underneath.

We learn plenty about them that we don't know at the beginning.

Estevez is a jock -- but he does sports for his dad and doesn't like who he's become in the process.
Nelson is a thug -- but actually scared underneath, using his bad attitude as a cover for his vulnerability.
Hall is a nerd -- but feels the pressure of being a perfect student to which so few can relate.
Sheedy is an oddball -- but her weirdness and lies are only to cover a fear rejection.
Ringwald is a princess -- her arc is pretty limited and she's unsurprisingly(?) the character with the least depth, though the others expose her snobbery and hypocrisy.

Just a few off the top of my head that could sell well IMO. I don't have a problem with them releasing "The Breakfast Club". But there are thousands of films that could use a BD release or upgrade from a previous release more than "The Breakfast Club".

Deep breaths, man. I wasn't coming for you. Your reply was to a poster asking, in reply to your prior post, what alternatives to Breakfast Club you would propose as films not yet released on BD that would sell as well.
