If nobody on-line has done this yet, I'd be surprised. Why would it matter if WB does it? It wouldn't be anybody who was involved in the movie doing it, so it would basically just be a fancy fan-edit anyway.

Has there been any hint from Criterion that they have any plans in the near future to get into 4K UHD with any title?

1) Jon Mulvaney isn't a real person;

2) Warner isn't giving Superman to anyone.

Dawn would look beautiful in 4K restoration in all 3 cuts.
The fact that Jellyfish Eyes has a Region A Blu-ray in print but Dawn of the Dead doesn't saddens me.

Though I doubt that Rubinstein would hand over Dawn and Martin for a decent price, I wouldn't be surprised if Night sells well enough for Criterion that they explore other Romero films.

Picked up the following:
  • Barry Lyndon
  • Being There
  • Blind Chance
  • Breaking the Waves
  • Ghost World
  • Safe
  • Tampopo
  • Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!

Typically I would hold off until the B&N Black Friday sale but without the coupons it really isn't worth it. I also agree that Criterion direct supply is of higher quality and they carefully package their shipments. Will most likely pick up The Philadelphia Story and Le Samouraï at B&N next month but that should be it.

4K UHD is a fairly new format so I doubt it would happen anytime soon.

Criterion has been lately cutting corners so for them to invest in a product that's a niche within a niche will be uneconomical at this point. If you noticed they have done away with the booklets, jam packed extras on the same Blu-ray disc that ends up bit starving the feature film with terrible compression artifacts.

They even tried the dual format packaging that didn't fly with DVD folks. Believe it or not majority of their profits still come from DVD sales. #Sadness

Once they do decide to enter the 4K arena... I for one will be more than happy to re-purchase essentials like Seven Samurai, Days of Heaven, Badlands.

... For now they seem pretty content with how things are going.

They do seem to be transitioning back to booklets, of late, at least on some of their releases. I hope that trend continues.

Sure, but they haven't been consistent.

I swear if the upcoming Le Samourai Blu-ray comes with a foldout... I'll scream like a girl.

I'd imagine they'll put the booklet from the DVD in the BD. It's not massive, like 15 pages, so no reason they couldn't fit it in the BD. I've noticed they're including the booklets from the DVDs on most of their upgrades.

I think that all Criterion employees have to legally change their name to Jon Mulvaney, even the females.

They have always done a mixture - I have the original DVD release of Sullivan's Travels and it comes with a mere three page fold out. I think in the dual format period they seemed to be doing booklets more often but I assume it has more to do with materials/format/importance or maybe is just a random choice. They do seems to always provide the same item when they upgrade, so if the DVD had a booklet then the BD would also.

Deepscan envisions Criterion as a metaphorical penis, therefore the head is the first place that receives contact. It makes sense when you look at it like that.

Criterion's customer support is often praised. Mr. Mulvaney seems to rise to the occasion.

Now now, gentlemen. This is a family forum. We really need to keep it clean. And, we especially need to avoid the double entendres, if at all possible. Failure to comply might result in a stiffening of the rules. I am thrusting the onus on each and every one of you.

By the way, mja, does Metaphorical Penis not sound like the perfect name for a punk rock band?

Sorry to be off topic, but there supposedly was talk of it. If the studio did it, the quality would be much better, as apparent from the recent releases (one small issue aside). I and II was originally either meant to be one long film or a very direct continuation depending on who you believe. I think it will never happen due to the fallout. Ever wonder why you see "the views of the commentaries are not that of the studio?" Superman.

Back to Criterion, I also neglected to mention how awesome a 2001 release would be with supplemental material from the salt mines, which have been in the studio vault all along... Since we have been getting all sorts of Kubrick, maybe that would be the one to get?

I know we've all pretty much decided Jon isn't real, but he once replied to me on Thanksgiving evening. Would Criterion really keep staffers around to answer emails on Thanksgiving?

My understanding is that when it comes to 2001, Kubrick's final cut is all we're going to ever see. He didn't want us to see whatever he didn't want us to see, and his widow and those running his estate are bowing to his wishes. I'd love to see what 2001 was like before Kubrick cut, but it just isn't going to happen, so I live it. I just want a better transfer than the now decade old or older one we currently have, but I do want an interesting extras package, better than the one Warner supplied. I've talked about this before, so I'm not talking anymore.

Scream and cry all you want, but just keep buying Criterion editions. If we don't buy, they won't try.

Sorry I was not clear. I do not want the new footage edited into the film. I find it perfect as is, and it is clear is the director's intent. I just was to see the additional footage as deleted scenes. I would also love to see the tons of production art and interviews of how it influenced real world applications. Criterion does a great job with this sort of thing, and they would do a great job with this release if given the opportunity.

Le Samourai is very likely coming with a leaflet since there's barely any written content included.
