Francis Ha is one of maybe 5 or 6 movies I’ve ever turned off and not finished. It’s terrible. If I never see Greta Gerwig in anything again, it’ll be too soon.

Why? I like her a lot. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

NEW 4K RESTORATION

50th ANNIVERSARY

Directed by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea
(1968) Post-Bay of Pigs Havana, as bourgeois, would-be writer Sergio Corrieri sees off his parents (they embrace) and wife (they don’t). Later, his seeming best friend emigrates, too, only after a long harangue. He attempts to write, observes the city through a telescope from his très 60s apartment balcony, and wanders through the streets, book stores, and art galleries, always aware of glances from women, fantasizing about his cleaning lady - then seducing Rita Moreno-ish Daisy Granados' nervous/passionate working class teen. He watches a reel of sexy scenes cut from Hollywood movies by Batista era censors and attends a literary round table with the likes of Edmundo Desnoes (author of the original novel) and Jack Gelber (author of The Connection). We finally find out how he lives during an evaluation of his apartment by seeming commisars. He sweats his way through an embarrassing trial, and listens to a vintage Castro rant during the Missile Crisis. All filtered through brooding voice-overs, newsreels, and hidden camera treks through the city; a character study of a post-revolution désengagée through the techniques of the New Wave and Antonioni. 4K DCP restoration. Approx. 98 min.

A presentation by the Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos (ICAIC), Les Films du Camélia, and the Cineteca di Bologna. Restored by the Cineteca di Bologna/L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory and financed by The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project.

A JANUS FILMS RELEASE.

You know how everyone has a few actors they just can’t stand? She is on my list. She just bothers me.

For sure. I thought I would hate "Frances Ha" to be honest, but ended up enjoying it. I also thought Gerwig would annoy me, but I think she's really great in most of what I've seen her in.

She sucks, she's very annoying & the fact that she thinks she can direct now is even more horrifying than her "hack director boyfriend's" films

Frances Ha is one of the best movies that Criterion has released. Such a gem of a movie. Anyone who hates Greta Gerwig are heartless monsters.

I'm goon'a have an issue with you, Ray. That's one of my favorite films!

Anyway, I am really happy: Criterion shipped my order! So there's that!

As a film, Frances Ha wasn't bad but I found that its efforts to mimic the look and feel of a real low budget indie film were kind of phony considering that Baumbach was already well established in Hollywood by that point and that Scott Rudin was one of its producers.

I don't dislike the film. I used to own the blu-ray. After 2 or 3 viewings I had my fill.

I realize the film is poking fun at aimless, post-college 20-somethings living off their parents' coin or refusing to grow up. I like Gerwig as an actress but I don't like how the script shows Frances as sexless. She finds a place with two dudes that have zero romantic interest in her (Un-dateable!) yet she has a line where she calls the one hipster "magical".

I guess the point of the film is showing a woman in her late twenties with no direction in life questioning and second-guessing her life decisions. The french new wave homages are nice the first time but on repeat viewings it reminds me I should be watching something better.

Maybe this belongs in the "unpopular film opinions" thread, but I found 'Mistress America' far more enjoyable than 'Frances Ha'. I didn't dislike 'Frances Ha', and I get why its new wave stylings endeared it more to the critic set, but I connected more with 'Mistress America'.

Just poppin' in to say The Meyerowitz Stories is one of the great highlights of the year and might be my favorite Baumbach, and I like/love almost all of his work.

Also, Gerwig is one of the brightest screen presences around. I'll watch anything she's in (can't wait for Lady Bird), even when I don't like the film itself, like Frances Ha.

I don't understand your critique. She rooms with platonic friends of the opposite sex. So? I don't recall the "magical" line, but it sounds like she acknowledges that her roommate is a special person. Not for her, though, in a romantic sense. Usually those are the types of opposite sex friends that make for good roommates.
