"The Swimmer" is an amazing film. There's really nothing like it. The BD is great as well. In the comprehensive making of feature on the BD, the first AD and I think an executive producer are interviewed together. The first AD is clearly bitter that he didn't get to be the primary director on any films throughout his career and spends the entire time shitting on Frank Perry. Calls him a middle of the road director, which was far from the case, and basically downplays his role in the making of the film. It's pretty amusing.

I have question. I've never seen Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. Does it work well as a stand-alone movie? I've only ever seen the original pilot episode of the Twin Peaks series. I don't have to watch the film in the context of the entire series, do I?

Do not watch it. Finish the original series first, watch the film, then watch The Return. The film will ruin the original series for you.

Then again, I still don't understand a lot of FWWM...and I've seen the series many times over.

So it can definitely be enjoyed without the contextual framework provided by the show.

Which is on Netflix.

...you owe it to yourself to watch it at least once.
Thanks. I'll watch the original series first.

Yeah, if you plan at some point to watch the series, then watch the series first. FWMM assumes you’ve watched the series.

Thumbs down

Von Trier's films are depressing, but in a mean-spirited, manipulative, controlling way. Recent "revelations" about his rapey behavior towards Bjork came as absolutely no surprise to me.

Anyone seen The Burmese Harp?
Burmese Harp is great. Instead of exploring the world of Criterion dvds, explore the world of Masters Of Cinema blu-rays.

I've bought A Film Trilogy by Ingmar Bergman and 2 or 3 Things I Know About Her in the past few days. I'm not scared anymore.

GREAT film! Lancaster is like a sexy suburban Tarzan in it

Hahahaahahahaha, I think so. It's a Polish Mermaid horror/fantasy/musical I went spontaneous and grabbed it so I'll let you know if it's good.

It's some sort of a musical coming-of-age tale about man-eating mermaids. I might add that this is one of the worse movies Criterion has released, in my opinion.

Nice

And amazingly, my B&N order just arrived. Not sure what to watch first!

Stalker definitely needs to be watched tonight. I have never never seen it, and it doesn't feel like a middle of the day sort of film.

I've also never seen They Live By Night, but ... well.

Vampyr is clearly a night movie.

Maybe I will pop in Personal Shopper since I've seen it and love it.

Eh, no. Too much light. I have trouble watching films during the day. I don't know if that's just me. But sun sets early now, so Personal Shopper is going in vert early today.

Still one of my favorite Robin Williams dramatic performances of any film.

I haven't seen The Burmese Harp, but during the last few B&N sales, I've sprinkled in a few DVDs with the Blu-rays. I've bought Secret Honor, Mishima, House Of Games, Homicide, The Hit, and in my most recent order I ordered Under The Volcano and Tanner '88.

Agreed. He is fantastic in Awakenings and possibly my favorite dramatic performance of his only rivaled by One Hour Photo.

I have an order on the way and Personal Shopper is part of it. I've already gotten Vampyr. Stalker I got during the last sale. I'll get They Live By Night sometime.

I was at Barnes and Noble earlier and scooped up L'eclisse . Yay.

L'Eclisse is awesome.

Personal Shopper is fantastic. The reviewer here thought it was a little messed up. I, on the other hand, thought it was terrific.

Do you recommend Personal Shopper is you didn't like Clouds of Sils Maria?

I bought a room darkening roller shade to eliminate most day time light. My "man cave" is in a finished basement, though, so that helps as well.

I can't watch anything that requires some kind of brain power past 6 PM. I think I saw Stalker at like 3 PM. That's one way in which I have definitely started to feel old.

I hate to say this, because of the possible implications, but I really think the better film is Personal Shopper.

And I say this as a big fan of Clouds.

They are both good films, when it comes down to it.
