I was actually willing lay down around $75 for the Criterion but then I remembered they had certain discs from that era develop playback issues and a tarnished color on the play side of the disc. So I would hate to lay down that kind of cash with the chance of getting a defective disc, and 75 is still too much money for one movie. I could do it, but I would feel like a jerk-off for it.

I'll pick up the Studio Canal disc, I'll actually get the just released Japanese disc since I like its cover art better.

Word of warning, the Japanese disc doesn't have English subs. Most Japanese releases that aren't in English don't have English subs.

Don't have either, but the Beaver review will give you an idea of the differences:

A friend brought up to me the other day that there are no American/English-language musicals in the Collection. We've had plenty of music-based films like A Hard Day's Night, Monterrey Pop, and Inside Llewyn Davis, but no traditional musicals. Meanwhile, films like The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and, now, The Lure are in the Collection. If y'all could add any traditional style musicals to the Collection, what would you add?

EDIT: It's just occurred to me that The Mikado is in the collection. My bad! Still, the musical seems to be a vastly under-represented genre.

Hamilton: The Musical, the original Broadway cast performing the show (without an audience clapping, cheering, laughing, ooohing, and ahhhing)

...also, something by Stephen Sondheim.

I've bought in the sale-
-The Essential Jacques Demy
-Martin Scorsese's World Cinema Project Vol. 1 & 2
-Hopscotch, and
-Brazil.

Is there anything I can expect from these films?

Nothing, nothing at all.

West Side Story was kind of speculated to join the collection.

The "Lubitsch Musicals" collection, those are all in English, at least 3 out of 4 are great.

I’ve always considered it much more of a drama. There’s dancing, but there’s not really singing. The dance numbers also act as being part of a performance aspect rather than characters furthering the plot through song.

Oh my f*cking god!

I got to meet director Jim Jarmusch before a Sqürl concert earlier tonight!

Prior to this shot, I mentioned a "Jarmusch" bag I bought at the IFC Center last week in NYC and showed him the pic of it on my phone (I forgot to bring the bag tonight!) and then mentioned one of my favorite films was Down by Law as well as his collaboration in Fishing with John. Jim told me his favorite scene in that was with Willem Dafoe (but I loved the Tom Waits episode the most). Then I went into a Tom Waits impersonation and started singing in front of him "Along the river of men, along the river of men, up the stream and back again, along the river of men"! AND THEN, Jarmusch told me a funny story about Tom Waits (which I've already forgotten cause I was so star struck - fortunately my friend Marc remembers though) and I gave him a handshake...

AND THEN, he said "as long as its fast", we could get a group photo with him. He quickly put on his shades too (which I found amusing). So I gave my phone to this young man who took a fantastic photo of us.

Jim Jarmusch was really friendly and kind and talkative. Wasn't expecting that at all. Maybe he liked how "weird" I looked with my Fedora hat and crazy chin facial hair. I fit in.

Jarmusch is the epitome of "cool".

God damn, my life is now complete.

In that case a lot of older musicals won't really qualify either. They tend to have the songs being part of a theatrical performance (42nd Street, Footlight Parade etc.) that do not further anything, but are more or less "breaks" from the main plot (often backstage stuff in putting on a performance).

But, yes, given your definition of musical, there really aren't a lot in the Criterion Collection.

Jonathan,

In the immortal words of Jeff Spicoli....

Why don't I ever get to meet any cool celebrities like that? The closest I've ever come was a chance encounter with Dirk Benedict, way back in 1979 when I was seven years old, and Battlestar Galactica was on tv. My Father and Uncle had to restrain me as my little lungs belted out, "Starbuck!!!!!!!" I tell ya, for such a little twerp, I had some strong legs. I almost got away. I remember him turning my direction, giving me a thumbs up, and disappearing into a restaurant with a gorgeous brunette than looked exactly like Anne Lockhart. She was my first crush. Maybe it was my little hormones giving me extra strength, lol. I was a hornball at a very early age.

I did talk with with Ray Liota on the phone one time, however. He called into my brokerage firm overnight, and I helped him place a few trades for his portfolio. I felt like a boob, but I had to tell him what a big fan I was, especially of his performances in Goodfellas, Field of Dreams and Heartbreakers. He was fantastic to talk to, and seemed like just a regular guy. He did the best impression of Joe Pesci as Tommy DeVito.

"Alright, I'll tell ya something. Go F your mother. Bing, pow!"

Without even thinking, I said, "Ray (he told me to call him by his first name), you should do more comedy work. You're really funny. You got Pesci down cold."

And, without missing a beat, he asked me, "what do you mean, the way I talk?" I had to mute my phone after a few seconds of his nailing Pesci's lines. I was busting my ass laughing. I always hoped he'd call back in, and I'd get him. I was one of only two brokers that worked overnight, and handled the top tier clients. But looking back at his account in an account review, he only called a few times, and during market hours. Shoot.

The call was recorded, and after I told my supervisor, we listened to it, and laughed our asses off!

I have to say, I'm jealous of Jarmusch's mane of thick hair. He's nearly 65 years old, for God's sake. I'm 20 years his junior, and have to shave my head, lol. I've never seen any of his films, but the plan is to rent Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai after I've bought Le Samourai on November 14th. I'll have to rent it, as it's not available domestically on blu-ray, yet. But if I like it, and all signs point to that being a foregone conclusion (I love Forrest Whitaker, too), I'll probably import the three film collection of his from Amazon France; it's got Ghost Dog, Broken Flowers and Dead Man. Whitaker, Johnny Depp and Bill Murray are all among my favorite actors, and I need to see these movies. Down by Law and Mystery Train also both intrigue me.

I just need more hours in the day, lol. Too many great directors I'm being introduced to right now. It's a massive feeding frenzy. I'm going back to finish The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, which I just got in the mail. Andrew Dominik's work is new to me; I'll watch Killing Them Softly tonight.

It's such a great time to be a movie lover!

I've picked up/ordered the following so far during the current sale:

I'm hoping to get just a few more (The Marseilles Trilogy, Le Samouraï, and perhaps 12 Angry Men) and pre-order Election, too. The rest can wait until the next flash sale.
