Still, as a film lover (especially in my country where cinephiles worship Ozu like a God), I couldn't ignore him completely, and one day I saw Good Morning (1959) at my local repertory cinema. That movie changed my view, or prejudice, completely. Nobody told me before (well, I wasn't listening, to be fair) that Ozu made such a modern cinema which was fully aware of its audio-visual qualities and pushed them into abstraction, while following the stories and emotions of the characters at the same time. I was mesmerized by his spacing, composition, blocking of actors, use of color and heightened sound design. Even the background scenery (how could one forget that grassy hill behind the neighbor) and pedestrians kept stimulating my senses, with their vibrant colors and rhythmic appearing and disappearing. Gee, this guy made a movie like Jacques Tati! So, if you're into Tati, Pierre Etaix, or Michelangelo Antonioni, I wholeheartedly recommend Good Morning. Or better still, try any Ozu film with such a mindset. Also, I'd like to remind you that he didn't always make family dramas. Check out Silent Ozu - Three Crime Dramas Eclipse set. They are not some lesser, offbeat attempts at all. |

I've only seen one Ozu film, the silent "Tokyo Chorus". Which is an excellent film. I like to watch more of his silents, I've yet to watch "Tokyo Story", "Good Morning", or "Late Spring" which I need to remedy.

Cherbourg is the best one to start with, I think. Both are great though. The box set is wonderful though.

So I watched Stalker last night. Blind buy at one of the sales awhile back based on things I read here. Definitely a unique experience. I enjoy films that are abstract and open to many different interpretations, while at the same time asking the big questions. That is definitely this title and then some.
This is the 1st Tarkovsky I have seen and I know nothing about his politics, but does anyone else see this film as a not so subtle jab at the Soviet system? Or I guess any form of control and/or restriction? The Stalker's monologue at the end about the Scientist and Writer really felt that way to me. I was actually quite surprised how freely and openly a film made in 1979 USSR was so unabashedly anti government. Couldn't help but think of those eerie Chernobyl images we see nowadays as the 3 characters wandered across the landscape. And I have to admit the [Show spoiler] at the end freaked me out a bit. Totally wasn't expecting that. Thanks all for the recommendation. Will be revisiting this title in the future for sure. There is so much to attempt deciphering. Checked out Videodrome tonight. Have to watch it at least once a year. Really believe it has moved into my top 5 Criterions. Always strikes me how remarkably prescient that movie was. |

Denmark starts collecting VAT (25%) and customs fees on anything above 80 DKK. That's £9.50 ($12.50). And the postal service wants at least 160 DKK for the "service" of collecting those fees (it may charge more if you have multiple "categories" of import fees to pay).

Try one on a streaming service first and if you love it, buy the box set. That's the best way to go. If you love one Demy, you'll probably love all of them. And what a box set it is. One of my all-time favorite DVD/Blu-rays.
