I only own two Criterion Blu-rays:
Blow Out and Dazed and Confused.

Planning to add The Breakfast Club and Silence of the Lambs.
Maybe Night of the Living Dead, too.

My first Criterion DVD was either Seven Samurai or The Vanishing. It's tough to remember which came first, because I bought them pretty much around the same time.

On the day that I purchased my first Blu-ray player, I went to Barnes & Noble and bought Blu-rays of Le Cercle Rouge and Army of Shadows in order to upgrade my DVDs of those films.

My first Criterion DVD was RoboCop (which I bought on the same day I bought my first DVD Player.)

My first Criterion Blu-ray was Bottle Rocket/Chungking Express/The Man Who Fell to Earth/The Third Man (all ordered at once.)

I've seen several articles that have criticized this film for things that are supposedly "icky" given our modern sensibilities, including by the AV Club's resident idiot Mike D'Angelo. Serge Bourguinon deliberately altered the source material so that certain uncomfortable elements would be removed. I guess these people who criticize this film have never heard of taking source material and putting your own stamp on it. I'm a very liberal dude, but the overly PC shit has to stop.

Anyway, it's such a brilliant and heartbreaking film. It highlights how the best human relationships are often very pure, devoid of societal constraints. The two main characters are people looking for some kind of connection. It makes me think that if a similar film that far more people are familiar with, "Leon the Professional", were made today, could it be accepted? Or would the PC police be out for that as well? There's something very visceral about people connecting on an emotional, pure level, with nothing sexual or inappropriate attached, but it's being taken away by people who feel it's offending their culturally-affected sensibilities. Absolute horse shit. Rant over, but please see this film if you haven't.
I suppose it's called a rant for a reason, but I quite like Mike D'Angelo and often find he's one of the rare voices that squashes liberal PC bullshit film criticism (see his LB pieces on Sicario and Brawl in Cell Block 99). I don't agree with him all the time and I certainly don't on Sundays and Cybele, but he gets his points across much better than 95% of the critics out there. I think if he didn't bring in the "hindsight element", the brief DVD review would have been fine if too brief.

But other than coming to the defense of D'Angelo, I agree about PC bullshit having to stop and also the overall quality of this film. I'm way overdue for a rewatch, however. I'll probably make it a night and rewatch Kazan's Baby Doll again too. Man, what a freaking masterpiece that one is. WAC needs to get off their asses and release it.

My first six Criterion blus. I was very late to the game, but once I got a hold of On The Waterfront, I was hooked. I never looked back.

I find D'Angelo to be something of a tough-guy "no bullshit" poser. He can write, but you always get the feeling he's always trying to be "that" guy who's telling people "He's just being real" about something. I dunno. With some people you know they're speaking from the heart but others, they're putting up a front for some reason. I find D'Angelo to be among the latter. Nonetheless, he is respected by his peers and I can't completely ignore him because of this.

D'Angelo's fine. I called him an idiot in the course of the rant. I disagree with him sometimes, agree sometimes. But his review of "Sundays and Cybele" was way off the mark and it made the hivemind at the AV Club go on about things like, "Should we re-evaluate 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' because Randall McMurphy had sex with an underage girl?" Very few have ever said that the McMurphy character is an upstanding individual, just watch the movie for f**k's sake. That type of stuff really bothers me.

Bought at the same time, my first two Criterion blu-rays ...and first two Criterions ever....I had seen these films before on television.

My third Criterion bought a few days later and my first CC blind buy. The wallet killing began here.....this is the title responsible for setting me on the path of blind buying Criterion. Also my discovery of Wim Wenders, which led to my fourth Criterion (and second blind buy) Wings of Desire. It's been a terrific adventure since.

Greta Gerwig's Ladybird was reviewed on this site and scored a 10/10. It also has 155 critics contributing to its unanimously positive score on Rotten Tomatoes. It's pretty darn hard to get 155 people to agree on anything, so the "RT tomato-meter is B.S" retort (something I don't understand in the first place as it is an aggregate score of many critics) isn't really going to hold water.

"Haters gonna hate."

As for me, I'm very much looking forward to seeing it.

With regard to the discussion here about Sundays and Cybele and politically correct film critics...

I've just started reading Joe Bob Goes to the Drive-In by Joe Bob Briggs (John Bloom).

Under his Joe Bob Briggs persona, John Bloom wrote newspaper column reviews of assorted B-movies, sleazy drive-in flicks, and low-budget horror films, often rating them by the number of boob scenes, the number of decapitations, the number of kung fu fights, and such. The above book gathers several of his writings.

Joe Bob Briggs is best known these days as the host of TNT's MonsterVision back in the 1990s, and his reviews in this book have that same reckless fun-spirited vibe.

He was banned from a handful of newspapers even back in the 1980s for his lewd approach to cinema, and a critic like him would probably not have a career these days. (The closest present-day incarnation is probably The Filthy Critic, but even his stuff is watered-down by comparison.)

So I finally decided to purchase some Criterions on Blu-ray during this sale. I had to work on a Saturday 2 weeks ago and decided to treat myself. I own a handful of random Criterion DVD's that I've come across at Goodwill stores over the years but this being an expensive label to get into I've been holding off. I know that it will be worth it as I love the picture quality and special features that these releases are known for. I ordered from Amazon and only received 1 of the 4 titles in the mail, not off to a good start. Apparently my other package was lost/stolen. Today I received my replacement order and now have an extra copy of "Thief" if anyone might be interested in a trade? My first Criterion Blu's I went with are: Dressed to Kill, Mulholland Dr., Repo Man and of course 2 copies of Thief.
