1. Technical limitations in producing a requisite number of durable prints. This is the reason why Douglas Fairbanks made a B&W version of The Black Pirate. Once Technicolor developed the technology to make a single-strip color film instead of having to literally cement two different strips together, this wasn't so much of an issue.
2. Fulfilling contractual obligations to the Technicolor Company but primarily distributing a simultaneously produced B&W version for reasons of economy. Doctor X is an example.
3. 1950s television prints. Why go to the trouble of making color prints when TV was almost exclusively broadcasted in B&W? Sally and On With the Show are examples of two-color Technicolor films that only exist in B&W TV prints, but a couple of tantalizing fragments have surfaced that do give us a glimpse of what these films originally looked like.
4. Inexpensive preservation. This is the reason why the original color version of The Black Pirate survives only in B&W. The color version that we have is largely made up of alternate takes and outtakes.
The fact that we have The King of Jazz mostly complete is something of a miracle. Restorations from original two-color negatives are almost unheard of because most of them were destroyed in the late thirties when Technicolor tried to return them to the various studios (most were uninterested). Definitely looking forward to seeing this film again.
Thanks for the info. One that was found and restored was MGM's The Mysterious Island (1929) which I'd love to see but I haven't heard much about it since it was restored.

And it wasn't just major studios or big budget films that got beautiful artwork. Look at the poster for The Sin of Nora Moran-A Poverty Row studio and a minor film but a work of art poster. Sorry for the large image.

Very HAppy with my copy of MoC The Passion of Joan of Arc. Excellent Book and stunning art on the steel. But it is one of my fave films so I may get it if it is released in the UK & offered in the 2 for £25 offer down the line

Love The Age for Innocence, Glad that we (UK) are also getting Alice Doesn't Live here Anymore on Blu finally so this is great news. Now bring on Grease 2 for more Pfeiffer please Criterion!

Not crazy about these announcements, but the Dreyer is nice and at least there were some surprises.

I've never seen The Age of Innocence, but with Scorsese directing, and Daniel Day-Lewis, that's a no brainer. I thought DDL and Winona Ryder had interesting chemistry in The Crucible, so I'm curious to see them work together again.

The Passion of Joan of Arc should be in every film collection. I have the beautiful MoC release (the non-steel book), but hell, I'll get the Criterion if only to have a Region A release I can loan to friends.

Actually, all of these intrigue me. Some real nice variety with these releases.

You have to figure that even if they are pursuing a release of "Silence", it will be at least two years before they can release it, just based on the Wes Anderson Criterion upgrade schedule (and his are negotiated in advance based on his contract, so that's just the best case scenario).

That's that woman from The Mummy! She's one of the forgotten hot babes from the 1930s.

And who keeps a couch in front of a fireplace like that -- and without a screen?!!! The '30s were sure dangerous.

Mr. Maltin says...

Surprisingly interesting Poverty Row cheapie with supernatural overtones, told in flashback, about a hard-luck woman who falls in love with the wrong man and makes the ultimate sacrifice for him. More notable for its ambitions than its achievements, with great use of stock footage and a wall-to-wall music score, unusual for 1933. Best known today for its iconic one-sheet poster image.
Sounds like it could be fun.

Are you referring to the cancelled BFI release, or have I missed something new?

Don't know about y'all, but I don't think I've ever seen anyone under the age of 16 in the Criterion section at Barnes and Noble.

Maybe they’ll put the blue sticker over top of them to appease the pearl clutchers.
