Lolita is the only other WB title I could see being licensed out. Maybe Eyes wide Shut. 2001, The Shining, Clockwork, and Full Metal I don’t see happening unfortunately.

Yes, but On the Waterfront had existed for years without a Blu-ray release. Criterion also has/had a good relationship with Sony/Columbia, so licensing wasn't too much of a problem.

Criterion's relationship with Warner Bros. has improved over the years and has demonstrated the studio's willingness to re-release films with existing Blu-ray releases, such as Barry Lyndon (another Kubrick film) and The New World. However, 2001: A Space Odyssey is a big catalog title for the studio and parting ways with it would be like parting with their other big Kubrick films like A Clockwork Orange or The Shining or their other big catalog titles, such as Casablanca or The Wizard of Oz.

Of course I want to be wrong, but given the film's 50th anniversary this year, I have a hard time believing WB won't try to capitalize off a 4K UHD release.

Well to be fair, currently, there are some predicaments that are causing that.

I lost my Blu-ray collection in a fire in October. While I had renters insurance, my movies were not covered. However, I’ll be using a small chunk of our insurance money to build my collection back up (of course, I already have collection 2.0 going thanks to so many amazing, generous people on this site ). So when you’re getting ready to drop as much money as I am, with insurance money no less, and your about to get married, Id say the fiances approval is kinda of necessary.

I'd love to see Criterion wind up with all of Kubrick's films but those are the two I'd bet on. Still, if WB doesn't do an anniversary edition of 2001 this year, who knows.

I'm a huge fan. Total mindf**k of a movie. Check out Marco Ferreri's "La Grande Bouffe" as well, which is a real favorite of mine.

if they got it, Criterion would have to jump into 4K. I doubt a 2K release of 2001 would make many people happy.

Probably. A Clockwork Orange is rumored to be released by Criterion, since there's a 4k restoration collecting dust somewhere in the WB lot, and since I read that the deluxe Blu-ray for Clockwork is OOP.

I love the film and Michel Piccoli is outstanding as he usually is. I also have no qualms about this being a dvd only title because the A/V is sensational (although I would not bypass buying a blu version if available).

Michel Piccoli films from the late 60s through 70s are sorely missing on blu in any region.

I think anything is possible as home video will eventually be a niche market for collectors, imo.

As far as studio prestige goes, Casablanca is WB's flagship movie and untouchable. 2001 is in a tier below it and while the chances it gets licensed are likely <50%, it's still possible, imo.

Yeah I liked the movie I just was surprised how simple it was but yes Michael Piccoli was great in it.

Agreed big time. Would love to see Criterion release The Things of Life and Max and the Junkmen especially. More Claude Sautet is needed as well.

La Grande Bouffe is so brilliantly bonkers, almost works like a Bunuelian take on consumerist capitalism. One of the more depraved food-themed movies but I quite like it.

I hope Criterion is actively trying to wrestle these titles back. Makes no sense why SC would rather make no money at all on titles they own rights to in Region A. Love to give StudioCanal a piece of my mind. /endrant

Sorry just had to vent some frustration.
I don't think it works that way. Studio Canal already has the money from Lionsgate to license the catalog. It's Lionsgate who appears to be doing very little to recoup their investment.

It probably has the most loaded title ever. I went in expecting a late 60's riff on a Cagney gangster flick and needless to say I was disappointed.

Ferreri was definitely a unique voice, though. Love him or hate him, his two big movies are unforgettable.
