Brando's performance in Missouri Breaks is really something else. It's impossible to judge using standard criteria, so whether it's good or not is beside the point.

I'm a big fan of "The Missouri Breaks". Brando's Irish lilt is from another planet. That was definitely the first film in the "I don't give a f**k" stage of Brando's career. I have to wonder if Brando being Irish-American in the film was even in the original script or if it had to be thrown in there because Brando just showed up on set deciding to speak with an Irish lilt.

I bought it, and nothing happened. I think you're safe for now.

Exactly ! I did not start collecting his movies until AFTER Island of Dr Moreau (another performance where he lets the "crazy" out) and good or bad, there was nobody on the screen like him. I often wonder what kind of career Crispen Glover would have had if he was a "pretty boy"...

Good heads-up on Missouri Breaks, I'll have to look out for that one. Nicholson and Brando, has to be good.

Reminds me that I need to watch One Eyed Jacks again too, amazing film.

Janus Films has added 24 Frames (2017), the final film from Abbas Kiarostami, to their website.

http://www.janusfilms.com/films/1865

Quote:
For what would prove to be his final film, Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami gave himself a challenge: to create a dialogue between his work as a filmmaker and his work as a photographer, bridging the two art forms to which he had dedicated his life. Setting out to reconstruct the moments immediately before and after a photograph is taken, Kiarostami selected twenty-four still images—most of them stark landscapes inhabited only by foraging birds and other wildlife—and digitally animated them into subtly evolving four-and-a-half-minute vignettes, creating a series of poignant studies in movement, perception, and time. A sustained meditation on the process of image making, 24 Frames is a graceful and elegiac farewell from one of the giants of world cinema.
And this was mentioned a couple months back, but bears repeating:

Quote:
Janus Films, which handles theatrical distribution on titles from sister company The Criterion Collection, plans major releases next year in North America and the UK after negotiating the deal with Gillibert. The Criterion Collection will restore select Kiarostami films later in 2018.

And I’m going to be honest here I’m a democrat and all but I have no interest in Bowling for Columbine ... I really hate Michael Moore he just gets on my nerves. And I saw this at the movies when it came out but over the years I feel like Moore is just a hack.
1+ for Looking for Mr. Goodbar. Just read the book and was mesmerised by the story. I have never seen the film and have little to no chance to see it now given the copyright issues, other than in some low-res Youtube upload that has been dubbed over. I'm incredibly eager, but not keen enough to see it in some shitty version with compromised sound/picture. I'll wait - but the question is how long? I'm amazed this film, which is not even obscure (look at the cast), could be embroiled in copyright issues for so long. Perhaps not "embroiled", but noticeably absent from DVD/Blu-ray. I mean DVD has existed for years.

Looking for Mr Goodbar has been one of my most wanted films for ages on DVD or Blu-ray. I did finally break down and get it on a decent looking DVD 2 years ago as i don't think they will ever resolve the music rights.

Looks like Salesman was also added to Janus Film's website, an indication of an upcoming Blu-ray release.

I checked out both this review and the DVDBeaver screencaps this morning. It looks as though this Criterion release of The Silence of the Lambs is a revelation.

I saw this movie with some friends on opening weekend when I was in college. I remember coming back to my dorm room and pacing back and forth for a couple of hours just thinking about what I had seen.

I saw it that same weekend after having finished the novel the week before. It's hard to fully appreciate now, after all of the parodies and imitations, but what a knockout it was.

I was all in already but those reviews just pushed me to pre-order; something I rarely do. Good to see TSOTL is finally getting the home presentation that it deserves.

To me (and I felt this way immediately after seeing it in the theater when it came out) this movie is in that category that very few films fall into....it is the "perfect" movie.....

I saw it opening weekend as well. I remember it very well, in part because I am pretty sure it is the first R rated movie my parents took me to see in the theaters. I absolutely love the movie. I have read the book several times, and taught the movie in classes. I can't wait for this new release to arrive.

If you are a fan of Jacques Demy like me, mark your calendars....Demy's first English language film Model Shop (1969) will be released April 17, 2018, by Twilight Time.

Model Shop is somewhat of a follow up to Demy's first film Lola (found in the Criterion Demy box set). In this film, Lola (again played by Anouk Aimee) has emigrated from Nantes to Los Angeles where she works in a "model shop", a business that rents out pin-up models for the day to photographers (and can also be a front for prostitution). I haven't seen Model Shop, but from what I have read, the story is told mainly from the view point of a disillusioned young man played by Gary Lockwood, who drives around late 1960s Los Angeles one day contemplating the uncertainties of his future and winds up visiting a model shop where he meets Lola.

The movie is noted for its incredible footage of Los Angeles from that era, as viewed and lovingly conceived by outsider Demy. The cinematography finds extraordinarily beautiful images in everyday settings, from sand blown empty beach houses to oil well pump jacks to city streets. Reading about it, I have the impression the film fell into obscurity and became "lost in the vault", a fate shared by many smaller films from that era. It was hard to see for a long time.

An interesting bit of trivia is that Harrison Ford was Jacques Demy's first choice for the main character instead of Gary Lockwood, but Columbia didn't want Ford, thinking he would never be a star.

Just attempted to watch Stalker. Zzzzzz. Made it halfway and realized that I would rather do anything else than watch the last 80 mins. After not making it through this and Solaris, I am going to just say that Tarkovsky is not for me.

This movie was awful and Im glad that its Twilight Time releasing it instead of Criterion.
They have much better things to focus their time on than a kid moping through LA. The footage of the time was fine but nothing special that you cant get from other better movies made in the same era.
