Frankly, I'd prefer Shout Select & Criterion trade off Wild at Heart & Bull Durham.

Here's hoping with the MOC release we'll see this one Stateside. Next to Werckmeister Harmonies, Cure is the one title I hope Criterion releases each month.

That is prob. the least important thing I could think about regarding Field of Dreams. It's a work of fiction, and perhaps the screenwriters dreamed of Shoeless Joe Jackson being a right-handed batter for all you know. Who cares. It's a beautiful and mystical film.

Speaking of sports films, anyone else a fan of "North Dallas Forty"? It's one of the most brutally honest sports films of all-time, filled with a lot of great gallows humor. It's kind of like the football equivalent to "Slap Shot". It would fit well with Criterion IMO.

Just pre-ordered the Eureka. I'm sure whatever Criterion puts out, assuming they do, will be comparable in quality so I probably can't go wrong either way.

I love North Dallas Forty - Slap Shot too. And I agree, those always felt a lot more honest to me than the more fable-type sports films. But I do have a hard time imagining Mac Davis on Criterion. Not that I wouldn't buy it - just saying.

I'm glad to see Bull Durham get Criterion treatment; it's a smart, funny and at times poignant film that's about relationships as much as baseball, and features what I consider Kevin Costner's finest performance. Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon are terrific as well.

An MGM title I'd love to see back in the Criterion Collection (it was released on laserdisc back in the day) is Gillo Pontecorvo's Burn!

Not only would Mac Davis get a spot in the Criterion Collection, but John Matuszak would enter the collection as well, a place he so richly deserves.

If Mac Davis has to enter the Collection, I think it's best that it's for "North Dallas Forty" as opposed to something like "The Sting II".

Which brings me back to Tapeheads. Add Lyle Alzado from that along with The Tooz from North Dallas Forty, and then put Semi Tough in (Ed 'Too Tall' Jones) and VOILA! An "NFL Defensive Ends Box Set". Irresistible to any film buff or sports fan.

Wild applause, broganreynik. Thank you! I'd completely forgotten about this. What a great laugh to start my day! Gotta love Family Guy.

As absurd as that concept is, I'm surprised that somebody at one of the major networks didn't come up with it. There were some "questionable" ideas that somehow got green-lit for television in the late 70s. And, we know that the guys from KISS (Gene and Paul, especially) would do anything for a buck (*cough* KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park *cough*).

Just think of what might have been. CBS could have aired that and The Star Wars Holiday Special back-to-back. In the pantheon of horrible television special, those two would have reigned supreme.

I wish I could have been a fly on the wall for that meeting.

"George, we want to pitch you an idea. Star Wars is a box office smash. How would you like the opportunity to reach an even wider audience, expand on the Star Wars universe, and sell more toys/merchandise all at the same time?

How about....a Star Wars Holiday special? Now hear me out. We bring back the usual suspects-Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fischer-reprising their roles of Luke, Han and Leia. We'd bring back the droids, and Darth Vader. And, we'd introduce the rest of the world to Chewbacca's extended family. Then, we mix in some of today's hottest stars: Bea Arthur, Harvey Korman, and Art Carney. Just think of the potential windfall from bringing in fans of Maude, The Carol Burnett Show, and The Honeymooners. These people have grandkids, and oodles of cash! We're also thinking of a musical act. How does Jefferson Starship tickle your fancy?"

As for the doodle, I just don't see Criterion releasing Bull Durham. Though I could certainly be wrong, it just doesn't strike me as the kind of film they'd go for. This Is Spinal Tap makes much more sense to me.

If Criterion wants to foray into baseball films, I'd jump all over The Pride of the Yankees. I've been dying to upgrade from my DVD.

Definition of ham

3. [short for hamfatter, from "The Ham-fat Man," minstrel song]
a : a showy performer; especially : an actor performing in an exaggerated theatrical style

Spinal Tap are the ultimate rock and roll parody. Everything about them is exaggerated.

Then, there's Derek Smalls' wearing of the West Ham United cap in the film.
