I know it is no longer a perfect sign that something is coming, but Ron Shelton has had a "People" page for some time now.

Spinal Tap are the ultimate rock and roll parody. Everything about them is exaggerated.

Then, there's Derek Smalls' wearing of the West Ham United cap in the film.

That's a real stretch.

A lot of Criterion clues tend to be a play on words or a bit "punny". And if Criterion can release the Breakfast Club, they can certainly release Bull Durham.

Time will tell though.

Just realised today Andrey Zvyagintsev‘s The Return and The Banishment are yet to be released on blu-ray. What are the chances Criterion will release them? (Artificial Eye are set to release them in a couple of months)

If Criterion wants to foray into baseball films, I'd jump all over The Pride of the Yankees. I've been dying to upgrade from my DVD.

Agree. If Criterion wants to jump into baseball films, Pride of the Yankees is the one they need to do. When it comes to baseball films there is nothing better IMO than Pride.

Watched The Naked City this morning. I know this has probably been expressed countless times when discussing the film, but the on-location environment here makes for such a fascinating experience. It kind of off sets the mysticism of the noir for a grungier, more lived in backdrop, almost as of it's overshadowing this measly little murder mystery. Kids are playing around the water from fire hydrants, people are getting along with their day when a cop is rushing towards the man he believes to be the murderer, and even the climax of the film takes a moment to stop from its incredible final location to take in a tennis match from above. I was just constantly distracted, in the best way possible, by the time capsule of a city that sheds the fanciful prospects found in other noirs for every day city life. This isn't to disregard its other accomplishments - one of them chiefly being the great work done by Barry Fitzgerald.

And god damn, does Dassin know how to end a film. Now, onto Thieves' Highway.

I agree. We need both this and Brute Force. I even bought the DVD of Brute Force during the last B&N sale, hoping to trigger an upgrade for that title. I was also going to get the DVD of TNC but B&N didn't have it in their system anymore, which I thought was odd. Titles like these and the recently mentioned Dickens/Lean pair are pushing me closer and closer to purchasing a multi-region player.

No more of a stretch to think that a rock slightly bigger than the ham next to it is a "boulder".

I didn't say they couldn't, or wouldn't release Bull Durham. I love the film. The interactions between Costner and "Meat", er, Tim Robbins, still make me laugh after watching it thirty times-especially when Crash tips the hitter off to the incoming pitch, and he hits the bull in the right field seats. But it doesn't strike me as the kind of movie Criterion would jump on. The Breakfast Club is one of the best coming-of-age films of the 1980s, and holds a special place in the hearts of people like me that grew up in the 80s. The nostalgia factor makes it an easy sell. Does Bull Durham evoke any similar sense of nostalgia for anybody? Maybe for fans of minor league baseball; for all its charm, however, it just doesn't resonate the same way.

We're just going to interpret the picture differently. And, that's perfectly ok.

The ITV release of Great Expectations is not region-locked, wheres the Filmedia release of Oliver Twist is. Both are very good presentations.

Hobson's Choice was one of the must-have titles that prompted me to go region free. I then quickly added The Sound Barrier. Both are from Studio Canal and look great.

The Japanese release of Summertime is a nice upgrade over the Criterion DVD, and is of course Region A.

There is a French release of The Passionate Friends, but I have not yet picked it up.

Outside of the Lean/Coward box set, and the epics, I think that leaves just Madeline and Ryan's Daughter without an official release somewhere (the latter available, ironically, as a rather nice Spanish bootleg that even Beaver reviewed thinking initially that it was licensed).

What is the hold up with a Blu-ray release of Nights of Cabiria? I am assuming that Criterion lost the rights years ago?

Yes, StudioCanal has the rights. I don't think any new restoration has been done on the film, so sadly no BD release. It's one of my most wished for BD.

A boulder next to a ham indicating Bull Durham is less of a stretch than interpreting This Is Spinal Tap from a rock and a ham, at least when you cease the tired and pointless practice of trying to figure out what films are or aren’t “worthy” of being in the Criterion Collection.

But like I said, time will tell when Criterion officially announce Bull Durham.

It wouldn't make any sense to make the boulder to scale next to the ham. Criterion often do play on words like this, so BoulderHam in my view can only be Bull Durham. And again, with it being an older MGM BD release with a dated transfer, it's not shocking to see a boutique label re-releasing it.

I'd say getting a DVD of a movie hoping to trigger a blu-ray release is a more wasteful application of money than getting a region-free player. All of the great Dassin films are available in excellent Arrow editions. The Lean-Dickens films one can still wait for an updated restoration with lossless audio and extras.

That was the film I had watched prior to this one, and immediately made me want to consume every Dassin on Filmstruck (reluctantly, given how glitchy the app has been.)

That was in jest. My variation of the old "I just took one for the team."

If the rumors are true, this will be the second film Criterion will re-release on home video (the first one being Monterey Pop).

How likely is this ? Still haven't bought the first release of Belle de Jour, so I'd like to decide if I need to hold out or buy it during the next sale.
