While it's in the public domain, WB would be the ultimate rights holder. All the original elements like the camera negative are at UCLA.

I would love that. Another laserdisc title I would love for them to get back is Invasion of the Body Snatchers. I keep hoping that since Olive hasn't released a Signature Edition of that title that it might mean Criterion is getting the rights back? I can only hope.....

Oh man, that would be a dream come true !! This film deserves so much more love and respect than it has received. Every time Criterion releases a Hawks film it gives me hope for this to happen someday.....

Default Criterion Blu Announcements / Warner Titles on Criterion

I'm a total newbie to the Criterion thread...So, I was just wondering if someone could tell me when the new Blu-ray announcements are made ?...Over on Warner Archives, we get them at about the middle of the month so we're expecting some by the end of next week...

Also, I mentioned before about Warner titles coming out on Criterion...I had specifically mentioned The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, as that seems like such a perfect "candidate" for "The Criterion Collection"...but does anyone else have any info about Warner titles that have been (or might be coming) from Criterion on Blu-ray ?

Any help would kindly be appreciated !!

Wow, RIP. I really liked his score for Sicario. That's tragically young.

Announcements usually happen on the 15th of each month, except if the 15th falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or a holiday.

Here are all of the Warner titles have been released on Criterion: Short Cuts, Badlands, My Own Private Idaho, McCabe & Mrs. Miller, The Breaking Point, Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, The Philadelphia Story, They Live By Night, Lost in America, Woman of the Year, Being There, Blow-Up, Mildred Pierce, Cat People, Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams, The Asphalt Jungle, Pan’s Labyrinth, Barry Lyndon, The New World, Barcelona, Day for Night, The Emigrants, The New Land, and The In-Laws.

True Stories is the only Warner title (that we know of) that has not yet been released by Criterion but has been confirmed. After Hours, Mean Streets, Show Boat, Klute, A Face in the Crowd, The Magnificent Ambersons, O Lucky Man, Bringing Up Baby, Freaks, and Arsenic & Old Lace are some examples of Warner titles that have been rumored to get released by Criterion.

In addition to the mid-month announcements, they also drop a clue in their monthly newsletter which gets emailed around the 30th-31st.

Thanks so much for the titles !!

Do you think that possibly Warner's "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" might get released on Blu-ray from Criterion ?...It just SEEMS like such a "Criterion" title !!

I'm really hoping the 24 hour flash sale is this coming week. I plan on spending a bit. I'm 166 points away from the $50 gift card.

I enjoyed it. I think my opinion would fall in the minority, but I think it is one of the stronger modern films that Criterion has chose to release. I liked it better than the recent Assayas films, better than Phoenix, and better than the parts of Certain Woman that I did see.
I loved 45 Years but Criterion did release other modern films which I believe are quite better, some even great films. Just from the top of my head

1. Hunger
2. I, Daniel Blake
3. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
4. Frances Ha
4. Inside Lllewyn Davis
5. The Great Beauty
6. The Master Builder (really underappreciated)
7. Like Someone in Love
8. Certified Copy
9. The Kid with a Bike
10. Carlos
11. Che
12. Still Walking
13. Everlasting Moments (still my personal favorite contemporary release)
14. Gomorrah

But I also believe that there are glaring omissions. Dheepan, Pheonix, Personal Shopper and Blue is the Warmest Color were timely films, but not Criterion worthy in my opinion, at least as much as Amour, Winter Sleep, A Prophet or any of Asghar Farhadi's last 3 films. Also after years of releasing almost all the random Wes Anderson drivel they could get their hands on, they failed to get Grand Budapest Hotel which in my opinion is his best work till date and a genuinely great film. I also felt 20th Century Women would have been a good fit for them, so would The Meyerowitz Stories. And others on top of my head

1. We need to talk about Kevin
2. There will be Blood and No Country For Old Men
3. Moonlight (Why not? They did grab Boyhood, which I thought was a pointless re-release)
4. Babel
5. Like Father, Like Son/After the Storm/any other recent Kore-eda film
6. The Grandmaster (with all cuts and more footage)
7. The Tree of Life?
8. Shame
9. Medicine for Melancholy
10. Blue Ruin
11. Ida/Son of Saul/recent Andrej Wajda films especially Katyn
12. The Master (What a golden opportunity of a release!)
13. Foxcatcher/Moneyball/Capote, Bennet Miller seems to be prime Criterion material
14. Take Shelter/Mud/any Jeff Nichols film

In the DVD era they had arguably more interesting contemporary releases (apart from all the pountless Wes Andersons) like

1. Taste of Cherry (upgrade, please!)
2. Insomnia
3. In the Mood for Love (the DVD release was exemplary for it's time, in some ways still better than the blu-ray upgrade)
4. Before the Rain
5. Man Bites Dog
6. Ratcatcher
7. George Washington
8. Traffic
9. Hoop Dreams

Does anyone know if Criterion plan on doing The Grand Budapest Hotel? They’ve done pretty much all of Wes Anderson’s films, correct? And not terribly long after the original BD releases, in some cases. I’m curious as to why we haven’t seen this one yet.

I imagine it'll be released sometime this year, or at least announced, sometime around the release of Isle of Dogs.
