If Grand Budapest was coming out in time for Isle of Dogs, it would have been announced by now. I think it'll be out in time for the B&N sale in July.

Trailer for the 4K restoration of Wings of Desire.

https://vimeo.com/255001213

Quote:
Damiel and Cassiel, the film’s two main characters, are guardian angels – benevolent, invisible beings wearing long coats. They are unable to intervene in human lives, but they can hear the thoughts of mortals and attempt to comfort them. Damiel falls in love with trapeze artist Marion and wants to become human, even though that means giving up immortality. Peter Falk, playing himself as a former angel, has already taken that fateful step and urges Damiel to leave eternity behind too. The story is told from the point of view of the angels, who see the world in black and white. It is not until Damiel becomes human that the world of colour reveals itself to him … The film was shot on both black-and-white and colour stock. At the time, that required several additional steps in the lab in order to produce a final colour negative, which was several generations removed from the camera negatives. For the digital restoration, the original negative was scanned in 4K, retouched, and colour corrected. So the film can now be shown the way cinematographer Henri Alekan might have envisioned it. – World premiere of the restored version in 4K DCP.

I've never seen this film.
How much of it is in color?

Normally when the topic of his music comes up, I strongly recommend people to catch him live when he's on tour. Really sucks that I can't do that anymore.

When the protagonist chooses to "fall" from heaven, the movie switches to color.
It's a beautiful film. Though as far as art house romance movies go I prefer Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast, It a great film irregardless.

I've only seen Paris-Texas from this director and loved it.

Criteiron probably won't re-release it, so if it does get a new BD somewhere, it'll probably be a region B release from StudioCanal. Looking at the screenshots, I think the PQ looks very good. I wouldn't let it bother me.

The 2009 Criterion release of Wings of Desire is stellar. If Criterion did re-release it I would double dip, but only because it's one of my all time favorite movies. If they don't release it that's fine too, cause like I said, the '09 release is stellar.

I'm in the same boat as you (though I bought it a while back), but they might not re-release it for a while unless Wenders pulls a DA Pennebaker and prepares a new release with Criterion. Might be a while if it was the case, since there's a lot of Wenders that hasn't been released yet in the states (Until the End of the World comes to mind).

When I was first told about him in 2004 with the release of V.F, I had no idea he would ever become this Hollywood guy. Not even when he started getting more attention with Fordlandia.

Shame he is already gone.

I re-watched the film the other day. I could see Criterion re-releasing the blu-ray if they can box it up with some new Wenders offerings.

Yeah, I'd have to see some really marked improvement for a double dip. But that being said, I love the film enough to do it if warranted.

IFC has picked up Paul Dano’s “Wildlife”. I think there is a very strong Criterion possibility here.

[Show spoiler]1. Hunger
2. I, Daniel Blake
3. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
4. Frances Ha
4. Inside Lllewyn Davis
5. The Great Beauty
6. The Master Builder (really underappreciated)
7. Like Someone in Love
8. Certified Copy
9. The Kid with a Bike
10. Carlos
11. Che
12. Still Walking
13. Everlasting Moments (still my personal favorite contemporary release)
14. Gomorrah

But I also believe that there are glaring omissions. Dheepan, Pheonix, Personal Shopper and Blue is the Warmest Color were timely films, but not Criterion worthy in my opinion, at least as much as Amour, Winter Sleep, A Prophet or any of Asghar Farhadi's last 3 films. Also after years of releasing almost all the random Wes Anderson drivel they could get their hands on, they failed to get Grand Budapest Hotel which in my opinion is his best work till date and a genuinely great film. I also felt 20th Century Women would have been a good fit for them, so would The Meyerowitz Stories. And others on top of my head

1. We need to talk about Kevin
2. There will be Blood and No Country For Old Men
3. Moonlight (Why not? They did grab Boyhood, which I thought was a pointless re-release)
4. Babel
5. Like Father, Like Son/After the Storm/any other recent Kore-eda film
6. The Grandmaster (with all cuts and more footage)
7. The Tree of Life?
8. Shame
9. Medicine for Melancholy
10. Blue Ruin
11. Ida/Son of Saul/recent Andrej Wajda films especially Katyn
12. The Master (What a golden opportunity of a release!)
13. Foxcatcher/Moneyball/Capote, Bennet Miller seems to be prime Criterion material
14. Take Shelter/Mud/any Jeff Nichols film

In the DVD era they had arguably more interesting contemporary releases (apart from all the pountless Wes Andersons) like

1. Taste of Cherry (upgrade, please!)
2. Insomnia
3. In the Mood for Love (the DVD release was exemplary for it's time, in some ways still better than the blu-ray upgrade)
4. Before the Rain
5. Man Bites Dog
6. Ratcatcher
7. George Washington
8. Traffic
9. Hoop Dreams
I should have said modern and recently released. Some of the ones you listed are definitely better than 45 Years, some are certainly not, but that's just a matter of opinion.

Frances Ha, Still Walking, and Carlos are probably my 3 favorites from the ones you listed. ...oh, and Blue is the Warmest Color, which you couldn't be more wrong about.
