Agreed, Frank Borzage's Moonrise is an exciting announcement.

In for:
Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters
Au hasard Balthazar

and
Midnight Cowboy (And I am completely diggin' that cover art. Groovy, man!)

Terrible cover.

Had a feeling I'd regret caving it and buying that Balthazar dvd last year too!
Criterion released Midnight Cowboy on laserdisc so it was inevitable they would bring it out eventually, particularly as they seem to be re-acquiring several other old LD / DVD titles such as Silence of the Lambs and Rebecca.

The only thing people were doubting is that the Criterion clue of a sickly looking rodent was a reference to Ratso Rizzo, as it was felt that it was a reference to Il Sorpasso (an ill, sore possum).

I'll definitely be getting Midnight Cowboy (loving that 60s style psychedelic cover). It's one of many old MGM blu-ray releases I've had to upgrade (Apartment, Thomas Crown Affair, Graduate, Straw Dogs).

Interesting they’re releasing Midnight Cowboy, given the current climate. Really excited for AHB.

Edit: I don’t disapprove the release. I’m just observing. Don’t crrucify me.

I’m definitely in for Moonrise. I’ll wait for the reviews on Midnight Cowboy, but this might well be one of the rare blus that I double-dip on.

Question: When was the last time Criterion announced seven titles?

Those would be my choices too. I've never seen Moonrise but the plot sounds promising. Gail Russell is always worth seeing. I just hope for a non-overboard Dane Clark performance.
My best friend and I went to see Midnight Cowboy when it first came out. Mainly for that "X" Rating that we were sure would mean a flesh-fest. Needless to say; that didn't happen. I still liked the film but had to listen to my friend moan about "no boobs, no a*s, no b#*h!" all the way home and for some time afterward.

The first time I saw Midnight Cowboy it was on the ABC Friday Night Movie when I was around nine. Needless to say, it was cut severely, but I was still able to become immersed into the story.

As far as double clues go, I am really hoping for Paper Moon.....

Interested to see Au hasard Balthazar given its reputation, but I am extremely sensitive to any depiction of animal cruelty. I think maybe this came up before in this thread, but I couldn't find the posts. Would this be a difficult watch for someone like me?

They had edited about 35 minutes out of the movie, causing one critic to call it "11:25 Cowboy"

Superb month! Midnight Cowboy, Moonrise, and the Kaurismäki for me. Balthazar makes me too sad to want to upgrade the DVD.

That would be great if Criterion did that one(the moon is on the poster IIRC). Also, I know most have deduced the water as "streaming" but I'm hoping for Mean Creek and/or Deliverance.

Would the Mishima film interest one who has never read the author's work before?

I know, when I saw the other two I was fingers crossed 4 MONTHS was next. That one is older and was a bit more important contextually in terms of major prizes. Maybe they are doing a little more work on it.

I did figure it’d be a box set, though.

One of the best months in a while , it's hard for me to remember when was the last time I was sure I wanted at least 3 of the announced titles.

Midnight Cowboy
Beyond the Hills
Au Hasard Balthazar

I had to skip this sale because I didn't had enough movies in my wishlist, but next sale is looking good.

I don't feel Graduation was as good as his other films, but maybe that's just me, and I haven't seen the other 3 releases yet.

Great month. I'm definitely interested in Midnight Cowboy, Moonrise, and Au hasard Balthazar (even though I just bought the DVD a few months ago).

A bit annoying MOONRISE is 40 bucks with such a slim supplement. In the old days, I think this would’ve been marked down to 30.
