I'm with you there with Still Walking. Terrific film. I hoped Criterion would keep releasing Kore-eda films but it seems at present the best hope for a US release of a Kore-eda film is hoping IFC snags distribution rights. Film Movement's After the Storm blu is excellent and I've read they have rights to The Third Murder.

I don't recall After the Storm playing in art houses near me and I know for a fact Our Little Sister was booked then cancelled before it was going to open. Thankfully, the local cinematheque picked it up. Another great film.

I've been checking out some Francesco Rosi films lately and I am a huge fan of what I've seen. "The Moment of Truth" is absolutely incredible, as are "Salvatore Giuliano" and "Hands Over the City". Highly recommend picking up "The Moment of Truth" as well as the Arrow disc of "Salvator Giuliano" and the MoC disc of "Hands Over the City" if you're region free. Hopefully, Criterion will upgrade those two to give more people a chance to see them. They're very powerful films.

The Last Picture Show is actually airing on TCM at 2:15 am Tuesday. Also, Women in Love is airing Saturday morning at 4:30.

You should also check out Three Brothers via Arrow (transfer’s a bit blown out highlights wise but otherwise fairly solid). Hopefully someone also puts out The Matei Affair soon, I believe it has been restored.

Well imo the question should be "Where are any of Koreeda's films pre-Still Walking?" coz Nobody Knows for instance was as big, if not bigger than any other Koreeda film in terms of profile in the west when it came out and Maborosi and Distance were also kinda "must-see" Japanese films on DVD by fans getting into j-cinema back in the day.

I know Nobody Knows has a French release on BD from ARP Sélection, but it doesn't have any English subs. After Life imo is Koreeda's masterpiece and I would love to own it in HD but I just don't know what's going on with his back catalogue tbh, is it because there haven't been any Japanese releases yet so distributors are waiting on decent quality HD masters, or do they consider his work before Nobody Knows to be too sort of "lesser known" these days?

I know that in After Life's case I think we came very close to seeing a Hollywood remake around 7-10 yrs back because there was a lot of online chatter about that (IIRC I think a female director was connected, perhaps Penny Marshall or Nancy Meyers? I seem to recall it was a someone like that) but obviously that never actually materialised, so it's very possible that one of the major studios have been locking down the licensing rights (think it may have been MGM pushing for a remake, really not sure though).

When oh when is Criterion gonna take that woman's face from "People on Sunday" off of their site's home page??? For about three weeks, now, every time I go to Criterion's site, first thing, I get that woman's bizarre, grinch-like grin...

Has anybody had issues with their Red Desert disc? My disc won't properly display the disc menu, even though the film plays.

I had a friend over last night to watch Personal Shopper and she loved it. I threw in Assayas' Summer Hours after and damned if it didn't freeze and jump ahead around chapter 9 even though I'd inspected it for defects about 6 months ago (I thought I'd dodged that particular bullet). I guess I can exchange it, but does that mean any and all of those problematic Criterion discs from that period could manifest rot down the line? I have quite a few of them with numbers indicating they're from that bad pressing plant. I seperated out the discs with the BVDL inscription (those are safe, yes?) but that left a good 16 or so. I can't find much information beyond 2015 regarding this issue...anybody know if returning them all to be on the safe side is the best bet? Will Criterion even allow that now?

A copy of Nobody Knows on DVD could be had for about $5. I think that's what I spent on it a year or so ago. Some of the other titles are OOP in the U.S. I hadn't seen it prior to buying it. Sure it's a DVD, but it was darn near the best 5 bucks I ever spent on a film in my collection.

I've got the UK releases of I Wish and Like Father, Like Son, too. ...and CC's Still Walking.

I'd love to see one of the "forgotten" titles get released.

I would urge you to contact Jon Mulvaney (mulvaney@criterion.com) and explain your situation.

He'll more than likely tell you to mail the disc(s) back free of charge and will have the corrected ones sent back to you.

thanks for mentioning this. somehow, the fact that this film even exists slipped past me.

I just picked it up on Amazon for around $13, new.

Same thing happened to me with Summer Hours. I had checked it following Criterion's first announcement of problem titles a few years back and it was fine. But in December last it froze. I didn't even bother emailing, but just sent the disc to mulvaney. Got a replacement in the mail a week later.

Will this happen to other older discs? Probably. A quick check is to play the layer change at the outside edge of the bd where the bronzing\oxidation occurs, usually halfway thru the film. If your player makes it, your disc is ok -- for now.
