I would love to do a Criterion double-feature of The Seventh Victim and Rosemary's Baby.

I'd love to advise you to hold your breath, but sadly I cannot.

I don't see that happening anytime soon........... but maybe a The Seventh Victim release could be a possibility.... seems like most Val Lewton productions would be a worthy option for Criterion.

Just noticed that I Walked With a Zombie apparently has a Japanese BD, and glancing at the DVDBeaver page, it looks decent, so there's at least an HD master out there... That said, it wasn't one of my favorites of the Lewtons I've seen.

The Seventh Victim and Isle of the Dead were the two I liked the most, and Curse is the one I most want to see that I've not yet. There was a Lewton retro near me a couple months ago, and I made it to several, but I had to skip the Curse.../Ghost Ship double as well as The Bad and the Beautiful/Bedlam double, much to my chagrin, as The Bad... has come up frequently in various places since then.

Speaking of films I like Criterion re-release would be Rohmer's Six Moral Tales. Though I guess there's little chance of that?

Recently got Arrow's Rohmer set. If no one else is gonna release him, I may still get the French blu-ray set for completion.

Just saw a screening of LES ABYSSES and during the intro by Jonathan Rosenbaun he confirmed that Criterion is working on a box set of all 5 of Nico Papatakis’ films.

Though it wasn’t confirmed at the time, Janus did tweet about it a few days ago.

Thanks for sharing!

Oh cool! I didn’t see the tweet.

I’m happy he used the phrase “box set”. It feels better than staggering these.

Statement from Warner quoted on that page:
Quote:
"Distribution rights to RKO films in Japan were sold off years before we ended up owning that library. We have no knowledge of what is being released there. We can only state that it does not involve the use of our original elements"

Scottie, if you feel there’s enough interest for a Papatakis thread, feel free to cite my information in it as “evidence”.

Do any owners of 100 Years of Olympic Films: 1912-2012 want to do a great service?

It would vastly benefit the database and yield my eternal gratefulness.

Hey Aaron! Hope all has been well, buddy!

If you have some spare time and could provide me with the audio tracks, subtitles, and aspect ratios per film, it’d be greatly appreciated!

So I’ll be looking into other Louis Malle films!
Malle's films are all quite different, but Murmur of the Heart is another coming of age film that is really good.

Based on your fav films list, something tells me that you also may enjoy My Life As a Dog which was discussed a bit recently in this thread.

...and if you haven't seen anything by Kurosawa, his films would be a logical step for someone wanting to explore foreign film and The CC. Ikiru is my favorite.

  2. Cimarron (1930/31) (WB)
  3. The Great Ziegfeld (1936) (WB)
  4. The Life of Emile Zola (1937) (WB)

  9. Around the World in 80 Days (1956) (WB)
  10. Ordinary People (1980) (Paramount)
And it ain't lack of HD transfers; of those 10, AFAIK the only one not available on either HD streaming or foreign BD is The Life of Emile Zola (though most of those could be improved on). The biggest problem seems to be lack of interest in catalog titles, especially at WB.
When/where did "Around the World in 80 Days" show up in HD? I thought it needed massive amounts of restoration, but honestly I haven't been keeping up on it, I wouldn't be surprised if it's out there by now.

Nice to see talk about My Life as a Dog, beautiful film. I'll need to pick that up, hopefully this year.

Also, the discussion on Ordinary People makes me happy. Any chance to get more word out about that film so that it can see the Blu-ray release it deserves, preferably from Criterion with a fresh remaster. I've been meaning to email them suggesting it as a release. If you haven't checked it out yet, please do. It's one of the most moving films I've ever seen.

Side note: the poster art would make a decent cover, being that it gets across in a very subtle way how people/families have a lot of darkness behind a seemingly perfect exterior that they're unwilling to admit to others. Fitting for a theme of the movie, but the art is rather simple. I'd propose, as an alternate choice for new art, a family portrait with a crack in the glass, dividing the mother from the father and son. Maybe even have Timothy Hutton crossing his arms like in the movie.

Speaking of the Paramount library, I want a Criterion release of Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet (1968).
