I was practically raised by that film. My mother sat me down in front of the tv at an early age and said, "here, watch this!" So, I did.

I know the feeling. Same thing happened to me the first time I saw his films. Check out Badlands and The New World when you get a chance.

Thoughts on Darjeeling:

OK, I'm not here to start a Wes Anderson feud. I think we can all agree that regardless, he is a competent filmmaker.

So as to Darjeeling. I hadn't seen it in quite a while because - to make a very odd comparison - it reminded me of Star Trek Nemesis. What do I mean by that? Star Trek X was pretty awful, but the one nice thing about it was just seeing characters we care about even if they weren't doing anythng exciting. Sort of like a visit to old friends.

Likewise Darjeeling had that familiar feel of a Wes Anderson film, the same style that was so lovely in Rushmore or Tannenbaums. The difference is that if we never saw Rushmore, Darjeeling wouldn't make us want to see more any more than Nemesis would make a Star Trek fan of someone. It was all "comfort food".

That said, it wasn't a bad film at all, so I gave it a second shot. Especially since the Bill Murray scene itself is somewhat sublime.

But I think this film is one of the rare example where understanding the story behind the film makes it a little more beautiful. Certainly a film should never rely on that, but it happened here. I was pleasantly surprised that the little essay in the booklet said pretty much the same thing. Sometimes art is self-reflexive. There's nothing wrong with that now and again, and viewing it as such I found a little extra enjoyment out of it.

His best film? Not by a long shot, but I've warmed to it.

Oh, and like Bottle Rocket, I have to admit Anderson's color palette is kind of amazing and I'm glad to have them on Blu-ray.

No feud from me... it's my favorite Anderson film-to-date. I think that anyone who can relate to dysfunctionality, in families especially, or being the outcast, which most of us can, should have no problem being able to appreciate Anderson's brand of storytelling.

Probably Eisenstein: The Sound Years set.

CC would love that release (Edit: saw that he said something). I myself, would love Criterion to get the rights back to the Paul Morrissey horror films Blood for Dracula and Flesh For Frankenstein.

Who re-released those last? Was it Image? Didn't they also release Heat, Trash, and Flesh?

I believe so. I still want to get that Paul Morrissey collection dvd set (Flesh, Trash, Heat) because it comes with a 4th disc I believe of a doc. I have the Image Blood for Dracula and Flesh for Frankenstein films because they look to have better transfers than the Criterions. They have all the features of the Criterions too.

CC, that's the kind of parenting we need more of in this country. These reality shows and facebook garbage is killing our children. It's quality films like Salo, that will give our kids that 'well rounded' personality they really need.

While CG's game is still being played, I thought of a new one to go along with that. We all look forward to CC's newsletters which contain a picture clue as to an upcoming release. So, if you had the chance to pick a movie for Criterion to release, either new to the catalog, or something from their DVD/laserdisc days coming to Blu, what would it be, AND, what little picture clue would go along with it?

For example: Pulp Fiction...I'd put an open briefcase facing away fromt he viewer with a glow coming from within

Check out "The New World" on Blu-Ray ASAP if you haven't already seen it...

"Badlands" will be a little harder to catch on Hi-Def... It was just on TCM a few weeks ago...

I'll add:

"Winter Light" + "Ingmar Bergman Makes a Movie" in a solo release - Bergman
"High and Low" & "Ikiru" - Kurosawa
"The Last Temptation of Christ" - Scorsese
"Young Mr. Lincoln" - Ford

And I'd echo the sentiment of wanting "Rushmore" on Blu as well...

I agree with you completely.

I can tell you right now, without a doubt, why people like Richard Ramirez, John Wayne Gacy, Ed Gein, Henry Lee Lucas, Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer, etc. became who they were... no access to the content of "Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom." It's as simple as that.

That's the only reason from me ever buying the 2-disc DVD at this point. I'm a fan.
