![]() Unless if you like classic film or TV properties(like early The Avengers and New Avengers). I mean least give the classic stuff to Criterion and some company that is going release many of the British war films. |

I'm thinking we're getting a Detrich / von Sternberg box. We already know an upgrade of The Scarlet Empress is forthcoming, and the top hat would point to Morocco. Criterion has also been trying to release Shanghai Express for nearly 20 years. Those three together could be a "hat trick". In theory they could also throw in the other three Paramount produced and Universal owned Detrich / von Sternberg films from the early 30s: Dishonored, Blonde Venus, and The Devil Is a Woman - but a 6-film box set may be expecting far too much.

Yes, please. Would love to update the Dietrich Universal Collection DVD.
Also in a separate un-related point hopefully we see someone release Going My Way soon on Blu. I'm hopeful since Universal is releasing Cleopatra and For Whom the Bell Tolls, so maybe Going My Way? If not Criterion needs to release it. |

I hope the Josef Von Sternberg set also gets an upgrade and comes back into print.

You simpletons.
The act of magic is creating something from nothing, creating a feeling of amazement. What is the one film that has an entire sequence detailed the creation of something from nothing, that fills the viewer with amazement? You guessed it, Tree of Life confirmed. It’s also pretty telling that a D is pulled out, because that stands for “Damn! Criterion is releasing Tree of Life?!?” |

I'd say that if Criterion planned to release the films in high definition, they would have been released on Blu-ray in the first place, not DVDs. There are some Region A friendly Blu-ray releases of some of the Eclipse releases, though. I know Japan has put out some of the Ozu and Kurosawa titles. |

The point of Eclipse was to get simple, less intense element/digital cleanup versions of the licensed holdings (particularly from Japan) into the market sooner rather than later. The rise of streaming, previously via Hulu and now through Filmstruck, has essentially now filled that role for the most part, especially since the streaming can present HD for less expense than upgrading what was supposed to be a low cost effort series to BD. It's also likely that some sets that would have been Eclipse DVD only release earlier in that series' existence became mainline releases, such as the Pierre Etaix box set.
