Here's another doozy from the PR release.

Unless if you like classic film or TV properties(like early The Avengers and New Avengers). I mean least give the classic stuff to Criterion and some company that is going release many of the British war films.

In theory they could also throw in the other three Paramount produced and Universal owned Detrich / von Sternberg films from the early 30s: Dishonored, Blonde Venus, and The Devil Is a Woman - but a 6-film box set may be expecting far too much.

I just saw Shanghai Express this past weekend and that news makes me very happy. I checked for a BD release as soon as I walked out of the theater and was sad it isn't available. I'm looking forward to seeing Blonde Venus and The Scarlet Empress in a few weeks, so I'll be primed for that ideal box...

That face looks pretty specific, so I'm sure whoever is in the movie looks like that.

edit; Reading other posts, I agree that Morocco makes the most sense.

Yes, please. Would love to update the Dietrich Universal Collection DVD.

Also in a separate un-related point hopefully we see someone release Going My Way soon on Blu. I'm hopeful since Universal is releasing Cleopatra and For Whom the Bell Tolls, so maybe Going My Way? If not Criterion needs to release it.

Count me in Day One for such a box set as a huge Dietrich fan.

I hope the Josef Von Sternberg set also gets an upgrade and comes back into print.

I've never managed to watch the Von Sternberg silents so I like to see a new box set release. The Last Command had a release by Eureka only in 2016 so there at least is a good source there. Looking at the screencaps of it looks crisp.

I am hoping for that as well. I have never seen Docks of New York. I have heard some refer it as von Sternberg's masterpiece.

You simpletons.

The act of magic is creating something from nothing, creating a feeling of amazement. What is the one film that has an entire sequence detailed the creation of something from nothing, that fills the viewer with amazement? You guessed it, Tree of Life confirmed. It’s also pretty telling that a D is pulled out, because that stands for “Damn! Criterion is releasing Tree of Life?!?”

You know, 'cause the real life magician uses that name. It doesn't have a Blu-ray release.

No?

Alrighty then.

There was a rumor some time ago that a Blu-ray of Daisies was in the works, but it obviously hasn't pan out yet (if at all).

I'd say that if Criterion planned to release the films in high definition, they would have been released on Blu-ray in the first place, not DVDs.

There are some Region A friendly Blu-ray releases of some of the Eclipse releases, though. I know Japan has put out some of the Ozu and Kurosawa titles.

The point of Eclipse was to get simple, less intense element/digital cleanup versions of the licensed holdings (particularly from Japan) into the market sooner rather than later. The rise of streaming, previously via Hulu and now through Filmstruck, has essentially now filled that role for the most part, especially since the streaming can present HD for less expense than upgrading what was supposed to be a low cost effort series to BD. It's also likely that some sets that would have been Eclipse DVD only release earlier in that series' existence became mainline releases, such as the Pierre Etaix box set.

Ugh, a Dietrich/Sternberg set would be aces. Like another poster said, we know SCARLET is coming, so this feels like a clue for a multi-film release.
